John 11:1And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sisterNow a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.
John 11:2and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) (And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
John 11:3therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;`Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
John 11:4and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.`When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.
John 11:5And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
John 11:6when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.
John 11:7then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;`Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.
John 11:8the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!`His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?
John 11:9Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:
John 11:10and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.`But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.
John 11:11These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;`These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;`Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
John 11:13but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.
John 11:14Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;`And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.
John 11:16therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go we also, that we may die with him,`Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.
John 11:17Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.
John 11:18And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)
John 11:19and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
John 11:20Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.
John 11:21Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:22but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;`But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
John 11:23Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.`Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.
John 11:24Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;`Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.
John 11:25Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:
John 11:26and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die to the age;And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?
John 11:27believest thou this?` she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.`She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.
John 11:28And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;`And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.
John 11:29she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.
John 11:30and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.
John 11:31the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.`The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.
John 11:32Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;`Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:33Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,
John 11:34`Where have ye laid him?` they say to him, `Sir, come and see;`And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.
John 11:35Jesus wept.Jesus wept. And Jesus wept.
John 11:36The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!`Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.
John 11:37and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?`And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?
John 11:38Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.
John 11:39Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;` the sister of him who hath died Martha saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;`Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.
John 11:40Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?`Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?
John 11:41They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.
John 11:42and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said [it], that they may believe that Thou didst send me.`And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
John 11:43And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;`And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.
John 11:44and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.`And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.
John 11:45Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.
John 11:46but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.
John 11:47the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?
John 11:48if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.`If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.
John 11:49and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.
John 11:50nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.`Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
John 11:51And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.
John 11:53From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.
John 11:54Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.
John 11:55And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.
John 11:56they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you that he may not come to the feast?`Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.
John 11:57and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew [it], so that they may seize him.Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
