Hebrews 8:1 | And the sum concerning the things spoken of [is]: we have such a chief priest, who did sit down at the right hand of the throne of the greatness in the heavens, | Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; | Now in connexion with what we have been saying the chief point is that we have a High Priest who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God's Majesty in the heavens, |
Hebrews 8:2 | of the holy places a servant, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord did set up, and not man, | A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. | and ministers in the Holy place and in the true tabernacle which not man, but the Lord pitched. |
Hebrews 8:3 | for every chief priest to offer both gifts and sacrifices is appointed, whence [it is] necessary for this one to have also something that he may offer; | For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. | Every High Priest, however, is appointed to offer both bloodless gifts and sacrifices. Therefore this High Priest also must have some offering to present. |
Hebrews 8:4 | for if, indeed, he were upon earth, he would not be a priest (there being the priests who are offering according to the law, the gifts, | For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: | If then He were still on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since here there are already those who present the offerings in obedience to the Law, |
Hebrews 8:5 | who unto an example and shadow do serve of the heavenly things, as Moses hath been divinely warned, being about to construct the tabernacle, for `See (saith He) thou mayest make all things according to the pattern that was shewn to thee in the mount;`) | Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. | and serve a copy and type of the heavenly things, just as Moses was divinely instructed when about to build the tabernacle. For God said, "See that you make everything in imitation of the pattern shown you on the mountain." |
Hebrews 8:6 | and now he hath obtained a more excellent service, how much also of a better covenant is he mediator, which on better promises hath been sanctioned, | But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. | But, as a matter of fact, the ministry which Christ has obtained is all the nobler a ministry, in that He is at the same time the negotiator of a sublimer covenant, based upon sublimer promises. |
Hebrews 8:7 | for if that first were faultless, a place would not have been sought for a second. | For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. | For if that first Covenant had been free from imperfection, there would have been no attempt to introduce another. |
Hebrews 8:8 | For finding fault, He saith to them, `Lo, days come, saith the Lord, and I will complete with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah, a new covenant, | For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: | For, being dissatisfied with His people, God says, "`There are days coming,' says the Lord, `When I will establish with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah a new Covenant |
Hebrews 8:9 | not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day of My taking [them] by their hand, to bring them out of the land of Egypt because they did not remain in My covenant, and I did not regard them, saith the Lord, | Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. | a Covenant unlike the one which I made with their forefathers on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out from the land of Egypt; for they would not remain faithful to that.' `So I turned from them,' says the Lord. |
Hebrews 8:10 | because this [is] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, saith the Lord, giving My laws into their mind, and upon their hearts I will write them, and I will be to them for a God, and they shall be to Me for a people; | For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: | `But this is the Covenant that I will covenant with the house of Israel after those days,' says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds and will write them upon their hearts. And I will indeed be their God and they shall be My People. |
Hebrews 8:11 | and they shall not teach each his neighbour, and each his brother, saying, Know thou the Lord, because they shall all know Me from the small one of them unto the great one of them, | And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. | And there shall be no need for them to teach each one his fellow citizen and each one his brother, saying, Know the Lord. For all will know Me from the least of them to the greatest; |
Hebrews 8:12 | because I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawlessnesses I will remember no more;` | For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. | Because I will be merciful to their wrongdoings, and their sins I will remember no longer.'" |
Hebrews 8:13 | in the saying `new,` He hath made the first old, and what doth become obsolete and is old [is] nigh disappearing. | In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. | By using the words, "a new Covenant," He has made the first one obsolete; but whatever is decaying and showing signs of old age is not far from disappearing altogether. |
