Luke 1:1Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Seeing that many have attempted to draw up a narrative of the facts which are received with full assurance among us
Luke 1:2as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word,Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; on the authority of those who were from the beginning eye-witnesses and were devoted to the service of the divine Message,
Luke 1:3it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, it has seemed right to me also, after careful investigation of the facts from their commencement, to write for you, most noble Theophilus, a connected account,
Luke 1:4that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. that you may fully know the truth of the things which you have been taught by word of mouth.
Luke 1:5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. There was in the time of Herod, the king of Judaea, a priest of the name of Zechariah, belonging to the class of Abijah. He had a wife who was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Luke 1:6and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. They were both of them upright before God, blamelessly obeying all the Lord's precepts and ordinances.
Luke 1:7and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren; and both of them were far advanced in life.
Luke 1:8And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, Now while he was doing priestly duty before God in the prescribed course of his class,
Luke 1:9according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. it fell to his lot according to the custom of the priesthood to go into the Sanctuary of the Lord and burn the incense;
Luke 1:10and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. and the whole multitude of the people were outside praying, at the hour of incense.
Luke 1:11And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense;
Luke 1:12and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. and Zechariah on seeing him was agitated and terrified.
Luke 1:13and the messenger said unto him, `Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your petition has been heard: and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call his name John.
Luke 1:14and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. Gladness and exultant joy shall be yours, and many will rejoice over his birth.
Luke 1:15for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother`s womb;For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; no wine or fermented drink shall he ever drink; but he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the very hour of his birth.
Luke 1:16and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. Many of the descendants of Israel will he turn to the Lord their God;
Luke 1:17and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.`And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. and he will be His forerunner in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn fathers' hearts to the children, and cause the rebellious to walk in the wisdom of the upright, to make a people perfectly ready for the lord."
Luke 1:18And Zacharias said unto the messenger, `Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?`And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. "By what proof," asked Zechariah, "shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years."
Luke 1:19And the messenger answering said to him, `I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God," answered the angel, "and I have been sent to talk with you and tell you this good news.
Luke 1:20and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.`And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. And now you will be dumb and unable to speak until the day when this has taken place; because you did not believe my words words which will be fulfilled at their appointed time."
Luke 1:21And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were surprised that he stayed so long in the Sanctuary.
Luke 1:22and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. When, however, he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they knew that he must have seen a vision in the Sanctuary; but he kept making signs to them and continued dumb.
Luke 1:23And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. When his days of service were at an end, he went to his home;
Luke 1:24and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, sayingAnd after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, and in course of time his wife Elizabeth conceived, and kept herself secluded five months.
Luke 1:25`Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon [me], to take away my reproach among men.`Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. "Thus has the Lord dealt with me," she said, "now that He has graciously taken away my reproach among men."
Luke 1:26And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which [is] Nazareth,And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
Luke 1:27to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name [is] Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin [is] Mary.To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. to a maiden betrothed to a man of the name of Joseph, a descendant of David. The maiden's name was Mary.
Luke 1:28And the messenger having come in unto her, said, `Hail, favoured one, the Lord [is] with thee; blessed [art] thou among women;`And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. So Gabriel went into the house and said to her, "Joy be to you, favoured one! the Lord is with you."
Luke 1:29and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. She was greatly agitated at his words, and wondered what such a greeting meant.
Luke 1:30And the messenger said to her, `Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.But the angel said, "Do not be frightened, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
Luke 1:31and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. You will conceive in your womb and bear a son; and you are to call His name JESUS.
Luke 1:32he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: He will be great and He will be called `Son of the Most High.' And the Lord God will give Him the throne of His forefather David;
Luke 1:33and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.`And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. and He will be King over the House of Jacob for the Ages, and of His Kingdom there will be no end."
Luke 1:34And Mary said unto the messenger, `How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?`Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? "How can this be," Mary replied, "seeing that I have no husband?"
Luke 1:35And the messenger answering said to her, `The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for this reason your holy offspring will be called `the Son of God.'
Luke 1:36and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. And see, your relative Elizabeth she also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
Luke 1:37because nothing shall be impossible with God.`For with God nothing shall be impossible. For no promise from God will be impossible of fulfilment."
Luke 1:38And Mary said, `Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,` and the messenger went away from her.And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. "I am the Lord's maidservant," Mary replied; "may it be with me in accordance with your words!" And then the angel left her.
Luke 1:39And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; Not long after this, Mary rose up and went in haste into the hill country to a town in Judah.
Luke 1:40and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. Here she came to the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth;
Luke 1:41And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: and as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the babe leapt within her. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Luke 1:42and spake out with a loud voice, and said, `Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb;And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. and uttered a loud cry of joy. "Blest among women are you," she said, "and the offspring of your body is blest!
Luke 1:43and whence [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? But why is this honour done me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Luke 1:44for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. For, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the babe within me leapt for joy.
Luke 1:45and happy [is] she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.`And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And blessed is she who has believed, for the word spoken to her from the Lord shall be fulfilled."
Luke 1:46And Mary said, `My soul doth magnify the Lord,And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, Then Mary said: "My soul extols the Lord,
Luke 1:47And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. And my spirit triumphs in God my Saviour;
Luke 1:48Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because He has not turned from His maidservant in her lowly position; For from this time forward all generations will account me happy,
Luke 1:49For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy [is] His name,For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. Because the mighty One has done great things for me Holy is His name!
Luke 1:50And His kindness [is] to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. And His compassion is, generation after generation, Upon those who fear Him.
Luke 1:51He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has manifested His supreme strength. He has scattered those who were haughty in the thoughts of their hearts.
Luke 1:52He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He has cast monarchs down from their thrones, And exalted men of low estate.
Luke 1:53The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. The hungry He has satisfied with choice gifts, But the rich He has sent empty-handed away.
Luke 1:54He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; His servant Israel He has helped, Remembering His compassion
Luke 1:55As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed to the age.`As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. In fulfillment of His promises to our forefathers For Abraham and his posterity for ever."
Luke 1:56And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. So Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned home.
Luke 1:57And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. Now when Elizabeth's full time was come, she gave birth to a son;
Luke 1:58and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. and her neighbours and relatives heard how the Lord had had great compassion on her; and they rejoiced with her.
Luke 1:59And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and were going to call him Zechariah, after his father.
Luke 1:60and his mother answering said, `No, but he shall be called John.`And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. His mother, however, said, "No, he is to be called John."
Luke 1:61And they said unto her `There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,`And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. "There is not one of your family," they said, "who has that name."
Luke 1:62and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. They asked his father by signs what he wished him to be called.
Luke 1:63and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, `John is his name;` and they did all wonder;And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. So he asked for a writing-tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all wondered.
Luke 1:64and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. Instantly his mouth and his tongue were set free, and he began to speak and bless God.
Luke 1:65And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. And all who lived round about them were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judaea reports of all these things were spread abroad.
Luke 1:66and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, `What then shall this child be?` and the hand of the Lord was with him.And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. All who heard the story treasured it in their memories. "What then will this child be?" they said. For the lord's hand was indeed with him.
Luke 1:67And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, And Zechariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke in a rapture of praise.
Luke 1:68`Blessed [is] the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel," he said, "Because He has not forgotten His people but has effected redemption for them,
Luke 1:69And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; And has raised up a mighty Deliverer for us In the house of David His servant
Luke 1:70As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: As He has spoken from all time by the lips of His holy Prophets
Luke 1:71Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; To deliver us from our foes and from the power of all who hate us.
Luke 1:72To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; He dealt pitifully with our forefathers, And remembered His holy covenant,
Luke 1:73An oath that He sware to Abraham our father,The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, The oath which He swore to Abraham our forefather,
Luke 1:74To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, To grant us to be rescued from the power of our foes And so render worship to Him free from fear,
Luke 1:75To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. In piety and uprightness before Him all our days.
Luke 1:76And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; And you moreover, O child, shall be called Prophet of the Most High; For you shall go on in front before the Lord to prepare the way for Him,
Luke 1:77To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, To give to His People a knowledge of salvation In the forgiveness of their sins,
Luke 1:78Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, Through the tender compassion of our God, Through which the daybreak from on high will come to us,
Luke 1:79To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.`To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Dawning on those who now dwell in the darkness and shadow of death To direct our feet into the path of peace."
Luke 1:80And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel. And the child grew and became strong in character, and lived in the Desert till the time came for him to appear publicly to Israel.
