Acts 17:1 | And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was the synagogue of the Jews, | Now when they had passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews. | Now when they had gone through Amphipolis and Apollonia they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Synagogue of the Jews: |
Acts 17:2 | and according to the custom of Paul, he went in unto them, and for three sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings, | And Paul, as his manner was, went in to them, and on three sabbaths reasoned with them out of the scriptures, | And Paul, as he generally did, went in to them, and on three Sabbath days had discussions with them from the holy Writings, |
Acts 17:3 | opening and alleging, `That the Christ it behoved to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that this is the Christ Jesus whom I proclaim to you.` | Opening and alledging, that it was needful that Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach to you, is Christ. | Saying to them clearly and openly that Christ had to be put to death and come back to life again; and that this Jesus, whom, he said, I am preaching to you, is the Christ. |
Acts 17:4 | And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few. | And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas: and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. | And some of them had faith, and were joined to Paul and Silas; and a number of the God-fearing Greeks, and some of the chief women. |
Acts 17:5 | And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring [them] to the populace, | But the Jews who believed not, moved with envy, took to them certain vile fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city in an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. | But the Jews, being moved with envy, took with them certain low persons from among the common people, and getting together a great number of people, made an outcry in the town, attacking the house of Jason with the purpose of taking them out to the people. |
Acts 17:6 | and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud `These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present, | And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down, have come hither also; | And when they were not able to get them, they took Jason and some of the brothers by force before the rulers of the town, crying, These men, who have made trouble all over the world have now come here; |
Acts 17:7 | whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king Jesus.` | Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cesar, saying, That there is another king, one Jesus. | Whom Jason has taken into his house: and they are acting against the orders of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus. |
Acts 17:8 | And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things, | And they troubled the people, and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. | And hearing these things the people and the rulers of the town were troubled. |
Acts 17:9 | and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go. | And when they had taken security of Jason and of the other, they let them go. | And having made Jason and the others give an undertaking to keep the peace, they let them go. |
Acts 17:10 | And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews; | And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night to Berea: who coming thither, went into the synagogue of the Jews. | And the brothers straight away sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea: and they, when they came there, went to the Synagogue of the Jews. |
Acts 17:11 | and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so; | These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. | Now these were more noble than the Jews of Thessalonica, for they gave serious attention to the word, searching in the holy Writings every day, to see if these things were so. |
Acts 17:12 | many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few. | Therefore many of them believed; also of honorable women who were Greeks, and of men not a few. | And a number of them had faith, and no small number of the Greek women of high position and of the men. |
Acts 17:13 | And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes; | But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. | But when the Jews of Thessalonica had news that Paul was preaching the word at Beroea, they came there, troubling the people and working them up. |
Acts 17:14 | and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there. | And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul, to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timothy abode there still. | So the brothers sent Paul straight away to the sea: but Silas and Timothy kept there still. |
Acts 17:15 | And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed; | And they that conducted Paul brought him to Athens: and receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed. | But those who went with Paul took him as far as Athens, and then went away, with orders from him to Silas and Timothy to come to him quickly. |
Acts 17:16 | and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry, | Now, while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. | Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was troubled, for he saw all the town full of images of the gods. |
Acts 17:17 | therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshipping persons, and in the market-place every day with those who met with him. | Therefore he disputed in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. | So he had discussions in the Synagogue with the Jews and God-fearing Gentiles, and every day in the market-place with those who were there. |
Acts 17:18 | And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, `What would this seed picker wish to say?` and others, `Of strange demons he doth seem to be an announcer;` because Jesus and the rising again he did proclaim to them as good news, | Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? some others, He seemeth to be a setter-forth of strange gods: because he preached to them Jesus, and the resurrection. | And some of those who were supporters of the theories of the Epicureans and the Stoics, had a meeting with him. And some said, What is this talker of foolish words saying? And others, He seems to be a preacher of strange gods: because he was preaching of Jesus and his coming back from the dead. |
Acts 17:19 | having also taken him, unto the Areopagus they brought [him], saying, `Are we able to know what [is] this new teaching that is spoken by thee, | And they took him, and brought him to Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, of which thou speakest? | And they took him to Mars' Hill, saying, Will you make clear to us what is this new teaching of yours? |
Acts 17:20 | for certain strange things thou dost bring to our ears? we wish, then, to know what these things would wish to be;` | For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears; we would know therefore what these things mean. | For you seem to us to say strange things, and we have a desire to get the sense of them. |
Acts 17:21 | and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing. | (For all the Athenians and strangers who were there, spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.) | (Now all the Athenians and the men from other lands who come there were giving all their time to talking or hearing of anything new.) |
Acts 17:22 | And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, `Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious; | Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars-hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. | And Paul got to his feet on Mars' Hill and said, O men of Athens, I see that you are overmuch given to fear of the gods. |
Acts 17:23 | for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I found also an erection on which had been inscribed: To God unknown; whom, therefore not knowing ye do worship, this One I announce to you. | For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I to you. | For when I came by, I was looking at the things to which you give worship, and I saw an altar with this writing on it, TO THE GOD OF WHOM THERE IS NO KNOWLEDGE. Now, what you, without knowledge, give worship to, I make clear to you. |
Acts 17:24 | `God, who did make the world, and all things in it, this One, of heaven and of earth being Lord, in temples made with hands doth not dwell, | God that made the world, and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; | The God who made the earth and everything in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, is not housed in buildings made with hands; |
Acts 17:25 | neither by the hands of men is He served needing anything, He giving to all life, and breath, and all things; | Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; | And he is not dependent on the work of men's hands, as if he had need of anything, for he himself gives to all life and breath and all things; |
Acts 17:26 | He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellings | And hath made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; | And he has made of one blood all the nations of men living on all the face of the earth, ordering their times and the limits of their lands, |
Acts 17:27 | to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us, | That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he is not far from every one of us: | So that they might make search for God, in order, if possible, to get knowledge of him and make discovery of him, though he is not far from every one of us: |
Acts 17:28 | for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring. | For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also his offspring. | For in him we have life and motion and existence; as certain of your verse writers have said, For we are his offspring. |
Acts 17:29 | `Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man; | Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like to gold, or silver, or stone graven by art and man's device. | If then we are the offspring of God, it is not right for us to have the idea that God is like gold or silver or stone, formed by the art or design of man. |
Acts 17:30 | the times, indeed, therefore, of the ignorance God having overlooked, doth now command all men everywhere to reform, | And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: | Those times when men had no knowledge were overlooked by God; but now he gives orders to all men in every place to undergo a change of heart: |
Acts 17:31 | because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.` | Because he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness, by that man whom he hath ordained: of which he hath given assurance to all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. | Because a day has been fixed in which all the world will be judged in righteousness by the man who has been marked out by him for this work; of which he has given a sign to all men by giving him back from the dead. |
Acts 17:32 | And having heard of a rising again of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, `We will hear thee again concerning this;` | And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again concerning this matter. | Now on hearing about the coming back from death, some of them made sport of it, but others said, Let us go more fully into this another time. |
Acts 17:33 | and so Paul went forth from the midst of them, | So Paul departed from among them. | And so Paul went away from among them. |
Acts 17:34 | and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom [is] also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them. | But certain men adhered to him, and believed: among whom was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them. | But some men gave him their support: among whom was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them. |
