Hebrews 5:1 | For every chief priest out of men taken in behalf of men is set in things [pertaining] to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins, | For every high priest taken from among men, is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: | For every High Priest is chosen from among men, and is appointed to act on behalf of men in matters relating to God, in order to offer both gifts and sin-offerings, |
Hebrews 5:2 | able to be gentle to those ignorant and going astray, since himself also is compassed with infirmity; | Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. | and must be one who is able to bear patiently with the ignorant and erring, because he himself also is beset with infirmity. |
Hebrews 5:3 | and because of this infirmity he ought, as for the people, so also for himself to offer for sins; | And by reason of this he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. | And for this reason he is required to offer sin-offerings not only for the people but also for himself. |
Hebrews 5:4 | and no one to himself doth take the honour, but he who is called by God, as also Aaron: | And no man taketh this honor to himself, but he that is called by God, as was Aaron: | And no one takes this honourable office upon himself, but only accepts it when called to it by God, as Aaron was. |
Hebrews 5:5 | so also the Christ did not glorify himself to become chief priest, but He who spake unto him: `My Son thou art, I to-day have begotten thee;` | So also Christ glorified not himself to be made a high priest; but he that said to him, Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee. | So Christ also did not claim for Himself the honour of being made High Priest, but was appointed to it by Him who said to Him, "My Son art Thou: I have to-day become Thy Father;" |
Hebrews 5:6 | as also in another [place] He saith, `Thou [art] a priest to the age, according to the order of Melchisedek;` | As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. | as also in another passage He says, "Thou art a priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek." |
Hebrews 5:7 | who in the days of his flesh both prayers and supplications unto Him who was able to save him from death with strong crying and tears having offered up, and having been heard in respect to that which he feared, | Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears to him that was able to save him from death, and was heard, in that he feared; | For Jesus during his earthly life offered up prayers and entreaties, crying aloud and weeping as He pleaded with Him who was able to bring Him in safety out of death, and He was delivered from the terror from which He shrank. |
Hebrews 5:8 | through being a Son, did learn by the things which he suffered the obedience, | Though he was a Son, yet he learned obedience by the things which he suffered; | Although He was God's Son, yet He learned obedience from the sufferings which He endured; |
Hebrews 5:9 | and having been made perfect, he did become to all those obeying him a cause of salvation age-during, | And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation to all them that obey him; | and so, having been made perfect, He became to all who obey Him the source and giver of eternal salvation. |
Hebrews 5:10 | having been addressed by God a chief priest, according to the order of Melchisedek, | Called by God a high priest after the order of Melchisedec. | For God Himself addresses Him as a High Priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek. |
Hebrews 5:11 | concerning whom we have much discourse and of hard explanation to say, since ye have become dull of hearing, | Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. | Concerning Him we have much to say, and much that it would be difficult to make clear to you, since you have become so dull of apprehension. |
Hebrews 5:12 | for even owing to be teachers, because of the time, again ye have need that one teach you what [are] the elements of the beginning of the oracles of God, and ye have become having need of milk, and not of strong food, | For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need of one to teach you again which are the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong food. | For although, considering the long time you have been believers, you ought now to be teachers of others, you really need some one to teach you over again the very rudiments of the truths of God, and you have come to require milk instead of solid food. |
Hebrews 5:13 | for every one who is partaking of milk [is] unskilled in the word of righteousness for he is an infant, | For every one that useth milk, is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. | By people who live on milk I mean those who are imperfectly acquainted with the teaching concerning righteousness. |
Hebrews 5:14 | and of perfect men is the strong food, who because of the use are having the senses exercised, unto the discernment both of good and of evil. | But strong food belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. | Such persons are mere babes. But solid food is for adults that is, for those who through constant practice have their spiritual faculties carefully trained to distinguish good from evil. |
