Romans 3:1 | What, then, [is] the superiority of the Jew? or what the profit of the circumcision? | What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? | What special privilege, then, has a Jew? Or what benefit is to be derived from circumcision? |
Romans 3:2 | much in every way; for first, indeed, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God; | Much every way: chiefly, because that to them were committed the oracles of God. | The privilege is great from every point of view. First of all, because the Jews were entrusted with God's truth. |
Romans 3:3 | for what, if certain were faithless? shall their faithlessness the faithfulness of god make useless? | For what if some did not believe? will their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? | For what if some Jews have proved unfaithful? Shall their faithlessness render God's faithfulness worthless? |
Romans 3:4 | let it not be! and let God become true, and every man false, according as it hath been written, `That Thou mayest be declared righteous in Thy words, and mayest overcome in Thy being judged.` | By no means: verily let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mayest be justified in thy sayings, and mayest overcome when thou art judged. | No, indeed; let us hold God to be true, though every man should prove to be false. As it stands written, "That Thou mayest be shown to be just in the sentence Thou pronouncest, and gain Thy cause when Thou contendest." |
Romans 3:5 | And, if our unrighteousness God`s righteousness doth establish, what shall we say? is God unrighteous who is inflicting the wrath? (after the manner of a man I speak) | But if our unrighteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man.) | But if our unrighteousness sets God's righteousness in a clearer light, what shall we say? (Is God unrighteous I speak in our everyday language when He inflicts punishment? |
Romans 3:6 | let it not be! since how shall God judge the world? | By no means: for then how shall God judge the world? | No indeed; for in that case how shall He judge all mankind?) |
Romans 3:7 | for if the truth of God in my falsehood did more abound to His glory, why yet am I also as a sinner judged? | For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie to his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? | If, for instance, a falsehood of mine has made God's truthfulness more conspicuous, redounding to His glory, why am I judged all the same as a sinner? |
Romans 3:8 | and not, as we are evil spoken of, and as certain affirm us to say `We may do the evil things, that the good ones may come?` whose judgment is righteous. | And not rather (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. | And why should we not say for so they wickedly misrepresent us, and so some charge us with arguing "Let us do evil that good may come"? The condemnation of those who would so argue is just. |
Romans 3:9 | What, then? are we better? not at all! for we did before charge both Jews and Greeks with being all under sin, | What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; | What then? Are we Jews more highly estimated than they? Not in the least; for we have already charged all Jews and Gentiles alike with being in thraldom to sin. |
Romans 3:10 | according as it hath been written `There is none righteous, not even one; | As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: | Thus it stands written, "There is not one righteous man. |
Romans 3:11 | There is none who is understanding, there is none who is seeking after God. | There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh God. | There is not one who is really wise, nor one who is a diligent seeker after God. |
Romans 3:12 | All did go out of the way, together they became unprofitable, there is none doing good, there is not even one. | They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. | All have turned aside from the right path; they have every one of them become corrupt. There is no one who does what is right no, not so much as one." |
Romans 3:13 | A sepulchre opened [is] their throat; with their tongues they used deceit; poison of asps [is] under their lips. | Their throat is an open sepulcher; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: | "Their throats resemble an opened grave; with their tongues they have been talking deceitfully." "The venom of vipers lies hidden behind their lips." |
Romans 3:14 | Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. | Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. | "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness." |
Romans 3:15 | Swift [are] their feet to shed blood. | Their feet are swift to shed blood. | "Their feet move swiftly to shed blood. |
Romans 3:16 | Ruin and misery [are] in their ways. | Destruction and misery are in their ways: | Ruin and misery mark their path; |
Romans 3:17 | And a way of peace they did not know. | And the way of peace have they not known. | and the way to peace they have not known." |
Romans 3:18 | There is no fear of God before their eyes.` | There is no fear of God before their eyes. | "There is no fear of God before their eyes." |
Romans 3:19 | And we have known that as many things as the law saith, to those in the law it doth speak, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may come under judgment to God; | Now we know that whatever things the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. | But it cannot be denied that all that the Law says is addressed to those who are living under the Law, in order that every mouth may be stopped, and that the whole world may await sentence from God. |
Romans 3:20 | wherefore by works of law shall no flesh be declared righteous before Him, for through law is a knowledge of sin. | Therefore by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. | For on the ground of obedience to Law no man living will be declared righteous before Him. Law simply brings a sure knowledge of sin. |
Romans 3:21 | And now apart from law hath the righteousness of God been manifested, testified to by the law and the prophets, | But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being testified by the law and the prophets; | But now a righteousness coming from God has been brought to light apart from any Law, both Law and Prophets bearing witness to it |
Romans 3:22 | and the righteousness of God [is] through the faith of Jesus Christ to all, and upon all those believing, for there is no difference, | Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ to all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference: | a righteousness coming from God, which depends on faith in Jesus Christ and extends to all who believe. No distinction is made; |
Romans 3:23 | for all did sin, and are come short of the glory of God | For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; | for all alike have sinned, and all consciously come short of the glory of God, |
Romans 3:24 | being declared righteous freely by His grace through the redemption that [is] in Christ Jesus, | Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ: | gaining acquittal from guilt by His free unpurchased grace through the deliverance which is found in Christ Jesus. |
Romans 3:25 | whom God did set forth a mercy seat, through the faith in his blood, for the shewing forth of His righteousness, because of the passing over of the bygone sins in the forbearance of God | Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; | He it is whom God put forward as a Mercy-seat, rendered efficacious through faith in His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness because of the passing over, in God's forbearance, of the sins previously committed |
Romans 3:26 | for the shewing forth of His righteousness in the present time, for His being righteous, and declaring him righteous who [is] of the faith of Jesus. | To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he may be just, and the justifier of him who believeth in Jesus. | with a view to demonstrating, at the present time, His righteousness, that He may be shown to be righteous Himself, and the giver of righteousness to those who believe in Jesus. |
Romans 3:27 | Where then [is] the boasting? it was excluded; by what law? of works? no, but by a law of faith: | Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? No; but by the law of faith. | Where then is there room for your boasting? It is for ever shut out. On what principle? On the ground of merit? No, but on the ground of faith. |
Romans 3:28 | therefore do we reckon a man to be declared righteous by faith, apart from works of law. | Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. | For we maintain that it is as the result of faith that a man is held to be righteous, apart from actions done in obedience to Law. |
Romans 3:29 | The God of Jews only [is He], and not also of nations? | Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: | Is God simply the God of the Jews, and not of the Gentiles also? He is certainly the God of the Gentiles also, |
Romans 3:30 | yes, also of nations; since one [is] God who shall declare righteous the circumcision by faith, and the uncircumcision through the faith. | Seeing it is one God who will justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. | unless you can deny that it is one and the same God who will pronounce the circumcised to be acquitted on the ground of faith, and the uncircumcised to be acquitted through the same faith. |
Romans 3:31 | Law then do we make useless through the faith? let it not be! yea, we do establish law. | Do we then make void the law through faith? By no means: but we establish the law. | Do we then by means of this faith abolish the Law? No, indeed; we give the Law a firmer footing. |
