Matthew 3:1 | And in those days cometh John the Baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, | About this time John the Baptist made his appearance, preaching in the Desert of Judaea. | And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, saying, |
Matthew 3:2 | and saying, `Reform, for come nigh hath the reign of the heavens,` | "Repent," he said, "for the Kingdom of the Heavens is now close at hand." | Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. |
Matthew 3:3 | for this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, `A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths.` | He it is who was spoken of through the Prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying aloud, `In the desert prepare ye a road for the Lord: make His highway straight.'" | For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight. |
Matthew 3:4 | And this John had his clothing of camel`s hair, and a girdle of skin round his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and honey of the field. | This man John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a loincloth of leather; and he lived upon locusts and wild honey. | Now John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. |
Matthew 3:5 | Then were going forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan, | Then large numbers of people went out to him people from Jerusalem and from all Judaea, and from the whole of the Jordan valley | Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan; |
Matthew 3:6 | and they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins. | and were baptized by him in the Jordan, making full confession of their sins. | and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. |
Matthew 3:7 | And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming about his baptism, he said to them, `Brood of vipers! who did shew you to flee from the coming wrath? | But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he exclaimed, "O vipers' brood, who has warned you to flee from the coming wrath? | But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? |
Matthew 3:8 | bear, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, | Therefore let your lives prove your change of heart; | Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance: |
Matthew 3:9 | and do not think to say in yourselves, A father we have Abraham, for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham, | and do not imagine that you can say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our forefather,' for I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones. | and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. |
Matthew 3:10 | and now also, the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree therefore not bearing good fruit is hewn down, and to fire is cast. | And already the axe is lying at the root of the trees, so that every tree which does not produce good fruit will quickly be hewn down and thrown into the fire. | And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |
Matthew 3:11 | `I indeed do baptize you with water to reformation, but he who after me is coming is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to bear the sandals, he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire, | I indeed am baptizing you in water on a profession of repentance; but He who is coming after me is mightier than I: His sandals I am not worthy to carry for a moment; He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire. | I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and [in] fire: |
Matthew 3:12 | whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather his wheat to the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.` | His winnowing-shovel is in His hand, and He will make a thorough clearance of His threshing-floor, gathering His wheat into the storehouse, but burning up the chaff in unquenchable fire." | whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire. |
Matthew 3:13 | Then cometh Jesus from Galilee upon the Jordan, unto John to be baptized by him, | Just at that time Jesus, coming from Galilee to the Jordan, presents Himself to John to be baptized by him. | Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. |
Matthew 3:14 | but John was forbidding him, saying, `I have need by thee to be baptized and thou dost come unto me!` | John protested. "It is I," he said, "who have need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" | But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? |
Matthew 3:15 | But Jesus answering said to him, `Suffer now, for thus it is becoming to us to fulfill all righteousness,` then he doth suffer him. | "Let it be so on this occasion," Jesus replied; "for so we ought to fulfil every religious duty." Then he consented; | But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him. |
Matthew 3:16 | And having been baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water, and lo, opened to him were the heavens, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him, | and Jesus was baptized, and immediately went up from the water. At that moment the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him, | And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him; |
Matthew 3:17 | and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, `This is My Son the Beloved, in whom I did delight.` | while a voice came from Heaven, saying, "This is My Son, the dearly loved, in whom is My delight." | and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. |
