Acts 15:1 | And certain having come down from Judea, were teaching the brethren `If ye be not circumcised after the custom of Moses, ye are not able to be saved;` | But certain persons who had come down from Judaea tried to convince the brethren, saying, "Unless you are circumcised in accordance with the Mosaic custom, you cannot be saved." | Now certain men came down from Judaea, teaching the brothers and saying that without circumcision, after the rule of Moses, there is no salvation. |
Acts 15:2 | there having been, therefore, not a little dissension and disputation to Paul and Barnabas with them, they arranged for Paul and Barnabas, and certain others of them, to go up unto the apostles and elders to Jerusalem about this question, | Between these new comers and Paul and Barnabas there was no little disagreement and controversy, until at last it was decided that Paul and Barnabas and some other brethren should go up to consult the Apostles and Elders in Jerusalem on this matter. | And after Paul and Barnabas had had no little argument and discussion with them, the brothers made a decision to send Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them to the Apostles and the rulers of the church at Jerusalem about this question. |
Acts 15:3 | they indeed, then, having been sent forward by the assembly, were passing through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the nations, and they were causing great joy to all the brethren. | So they set out, being accompanied for a short distance by some other members of the Church; and as they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told the whole story of the conversion of the Gentiles and inspired all the brethren with great joy. | So they, being sent on their way by the church, went through Phoenicia and Samaria, giving news of the salvation of the Gentiles, to the great joy of all the brothers. |
Acts 15:4 | And having come to Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly, and the apostles, and the elders, they declared also as many things as God did with them; | Upon their arrival in Jerusalem they were cordially received by the Church, the Apostles, and the Elders; and they reported in detail all that God, working with them, had done. | And when they came to Jerusalem, they had a meeting with the church and the Apostles and the rulers, and they gave an account of all the things which God had done through them. |
Acts 15:5 | and there rose up certain of those of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying `It behoveth to circumcise them, to command them also to keep the law of Moses.` | But certain men who had belonged to the sect of the Pharisees but were now believers, stood up in the assembly, and said, "Yes, Gentile believers ought to be circumcised and be ordered to keep the Law of Moses." | But some of the Pharisees, who were of the faith, got up and said, It is necessary for these to have circumcision and to keep the law of Moses. |
Acts 15:6 | And there were gathered together the apostles and the elders, to see about this matter, | Then the Apostles and Elders met to consider the matter; | And the Apostles and the rulers of the church came together and gave thought to the question. |
Acts 15:7 | and there having been much disputing, Peter having risen up said unto them, `Men, brethren, ye know that from former days, God among us did make choice, through my mouth, for the nations to hear the word of the good news, and to believe; | and after there had been a long discussion Peter rose to his feet. "It is within your own knowledge," he said, "that God originally made choice among you that from my lips the Gentiles were to hear the Message of the Good News, and believe. | And when there had been much discussion, Peter got up and said to them, My brothers, you have knowledge that some time back it was God's pleasure that by my mouth the good news might be given to the Gentiles so that they might have faith. |
Acts 15:8 | and the heart-knowing God did bare them testimony, having given to them the Holy Spirit, even as also to us, | And God, who knows all hearts, gave His testimony in their favour by bestowing the Holy Spirit on them just as He did on us; | And God, the searcher of hearts, was a witness to them, giving them the Holy Spirit even as he did to us; |
Acts 15:9 | and did put no difference also between us and them, by the faith having purified their hearts; | and He made no difference between us and them, in that He cleansed their hearts by their faith. | Making no division between them and us, but making clean their hearts by faith. |
Acts 15:10 | now, therefore, why do ye tempt God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? | Now, therefore, why try an experiment upon God, by laying on the necks of these disciples a yoke which neither our forefathers nor we have been able to bear? | Why then are you testing God, by putting on the neck of the disciples a yoke so hard that not even our fathers or we were strong enough for it? |
Acts 15:11 | but, through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we believe to be saved, even as also they.` | On the contrary, we believe that it is by the grace of the Lord Jesus that we, as well as they, shall be saved." | But we have faith that we will get salvation through the grace of the Lord Jesus in the same way as they. |
Acts 15:12 | And all the multitude did keep silence, and were hearkening to Barnabas and Paul, declaring as many signs and wonders as God did among the nations through them; | Then the whole assembly remained silent while they listened to the statement made by Paul and Barnabas as to all the signs and marvels that God had done among the Gentiles through their instrumentality. | And all the people were quiet while Barnabas and Paul gave an account of the signs and wonders which God had done among the Gentiles by them. |
Acts 15:13 | and after they are silent, James answered, saying, `Men, brethren, hearken to me; | When they had finished speaking, James said, "Brethren, listen to me. | And when they had come to an end, James, answering, said, My brothers, give ear to me: |
Acts 15:14 | Simeon did declare how at first God did look after to take out of the nations a people for His name, | Symeon has related how God first looked graciously on the Gentiles to take from among them a People to be called by His name. | Symeon has given an account of how God was first pleased to take from among the Gentiles a people for himself. |
Acts 15:15 | and to this agree the words of the prophets, as it hath been written: | And this is in harmony with the language of the Prophets, which says: | And this is in agreement with the words of the prophets, as it is said, |
Acts 15:16 | After these things I will turn back, and I will build again the tabernacle of David, that is fallen down, and its ruins I will build again, and will set it upright | "`"Afterwards I will return, and will rebuild David's fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will set it up again; | After these things I will come back, and will put up the tent of David which has been broken down, building up again its broken parts and making it complete: |
Acts 15:17 | that the residue of men may seek after the Lord, and all the nations, upon whom My name hath been called, saith the Lord, who is doing all these things. | In order that the rest of mankind may earnestly seek the Lord even all the nations which are called by My name," | So that the rest of men may make search for the Lord, and all the Gentiles on whom my name is named, |
Acts 15:18 | `Known from the ages to God are all His works; | Says the Lord, who has been making these things known from ages long past.' | Says the Lord, who has made these things clear from the earliest times. |
Acts 15:19 | wherefore I judge: not to trouble those who from the nations do turn back to God, | "My judgement, therefore, is against inflicting unexpected annoyance on those of the Gentiles who are turning to God. | For this reason my decision is, that we do not put trouble in the way of those who from among the Gentiles are turned to God; |
Acts 15:20 | but to write to them to abstain from the pollutions of the idols, and the whoredom, and the strangled thing; and the blood; | Yet let us send them written instructions to abstain from things polluted by connexion with idolatry, from fornication, from meat killed by strangling, and from blood. | But that we give them orders to keep themselves from things offered to false gods, and from the evil desires of the body, and from the flesh of animals put to death in ways against the law, and from blood. |
Acts 15:21 | for Moses from former generations in every city hath those preaching him in the synagogues every sabbath being read.` | For Moses from the earliest times has had his preachers in every town, being read, as he is, Sabbath after Sabbath, in the various synagogues." | For Moses, from times long past, has his preachers in every town, reading his law in the Synagogues every Sabbath. |
Acts 15:22 | Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole assembly, chosen men out of themselves to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren | Thereupon it was decided by the Apostles and Elders, with the approval of the whole Church, to choose suitable persons from among themselves and send them to Antioch, with Paul and Barnabas. Judas, called Bar-sabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren, were selected, | Then it seemed good to the Apostles and the rulers and all the church, to send men from among them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; Judas, named Barsabbas, and Silas, chief men among the brothers: |
Acts 15:23 | having written through their hand thus: `The apostles, and the elders, and the brethren, to those in Antioch, and Syria, and Cilicia, brethren, who [are] of the nations, greeting; | and they took with them the following letter: "The Apostles and the elder brethren send greeting to the Gentile brethren throughout Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. | And they sent a letter by them, saying, The Apostles and the older brothers, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, may joy be with you: |
Acts 15:24 | seeing we have heard that certain having gone forth from us did trouble you with words, subverting your souls, saying to be circumcised and to keep the law, to whom we did give no charge, | As we have been informed that certain persons who have gone out from among us have disturbed you by their teaching and have unsettled your minds, without having received any such instructions from us; | Because we have knowledge that some who went from us have been troubling you with their words, putting your souls in doubt; to whom we gave no such order; |
Acts 15:25 | it seemed good to us, having come together with one accord, chosen men to send unto you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul | we have unanimously decided to select certain men and send them to you in company with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul, | It seemed good to us, having come to an agreement together, to send these men to you, with our well loved Barnabas and Paul, |
Acts 15:26 | men who have given up their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ | who have endangered their very lives for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. | Men who have given up their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Acts 15:27 | we have sent, therefore, Judas and Silas, and they by word are telling the same things. | We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who are themselves bringing you the same message by word of mouth. | And so we have sent Judas and Silas, who will say the same things to you themselves, by word of mouth. |
Acts 15:28 | `For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, no more burden to lay upon you, except these necessary things: | For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no burden heavier than these necessary requirements | For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us, to put on you nothing more than these necessary things; |
Acts 15:29 | to abstain from things offered to idols, and blood, and a strangled thing, and whoredom; from which keeping yourselves, ye shall do well; be strong!` | You must abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from fornication. Keep yourselves clear of these things, and it will be well with you. Farewell." | To keep from things offered to false gods, and from blood, and from things put to death in ways which are against the law, and from the evil desires of the body; if you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. May you be happy. |
Acts 15:30 | They then, indeed, having been let go, went to Antioch, and having brought the multitude together, did deliver the epistle, | They, therefore, having been solemnly sent, came down to Antioch, where they called together the whole assembly and delivered the letter. | So they, being sent away, came down to Antioch, and having got the people together, they gave them the letter. |
Acts 15:31 | and they having read, did rejoice for the consolation; | The people read it, and were delighted with the comfort it brought them. | And after reading it, they were glad of its comfort. |
Acts 15:32 | Judas also and Silas, being themselves also prophets, through much discourse did exhort the brethren, and confirm, | And Judas and Silas, being themselves also Prophets, gave them a long and encouraging talk, and strengthened them in the faith. | And Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, gave teaching to the brothers and made them strong in the faith. |
Acts 15:33 | and having passed some time, they were let go with peace from the brethren unto the apostles; | After spending some time there they received an affectionate farewell from the brethren to return to those who had sent them. | And when they had been there for some time, they were sent back in peace by the brothers to those who had sent them. |

Acts 15:36 | and after certain days, Paul said unto Barnabas, `Having turned back again, we may look after our brethren, in every city in which we have preached the word of the Lord how they are.` | After a while Paul said to Barnabas, "Suppose we now revisit the brethren in the various towns in which we have made known the Lord's Message to see whether they are prospering!" | And after some days, Paul said to Barnabas, Let us go back and see the brothers in every town where we have given the word of God, and see how they are. |
Acts 15:37 | And Barnabas counseled to take with [them] John called Mark, | Barnabas, however, was bent on taking with them John, whose other name was Mark, | And Barnabas had a desire to take with them John, named Mark. |
Acts 15:38 | and Paul was not thinking it good to take him with them who withdrew from them from Pamphylia, and did not go with them to the work; | while Paul deemed it undesirable to have as their companion one who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone on with them to the work. | But Paul was of the opinion that it was not right to take with them one who had gone away from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone on with the work. |
Acts 15:39 | there came, therefore, a sharp contention, so that they were parted from one another, and Barnabas having taken Mark, did sail to Cyprus, | So there arose a serious disagreement between them, which resulted in their parting from one another, Barnabas taking Mark and setting sail for Cyprus. | And there was a sharp argument between them, so that they were parted from one another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and went by ship to Cyprus; |
Acts 15:40 | and Paul having chosen Silas, went forth, having been given up to the grace of God by the brethren; | But Paul chose Silas as his travelling companion; and set out, after being commended by the brethren to the grace of the Lord; | But Paul took Silas and went away with the blessing of the brothers. |
Acts 15:41 | and he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the assemblies. | and he passed through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the Churches. | And he went through Syria and Cilicia, making the churches stronger in the faith. |
