John 11:1 | And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister | Now a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha. | Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. |
John 11:2 | and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing | (It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.) | (The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.) |
John 11:3 | therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;` | So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill." | So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill. |
John 11:4 | and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.` | Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it." | When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it. |
John 11:5 | And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus, | Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. | Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus. |
John 11:6 | when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days, | When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place. | So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days. |
John 11:7 | then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;` | Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea." | Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. |
John 11:8 | the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!` | "Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?" | The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again? |
John 11:9 | Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see; | "Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world. | Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world. |
John 11:10 | and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.` | But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him." | But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him. |
John 11:11 | These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;` | He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him." | These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep. |
John 11:12 | therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;` | "Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover." | Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well. |
John 11:13 | but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh. | Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep. | Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep. |
John 11:14 | Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died; | So then He told them plainly, | Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead. |
John 11:15 | and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;` | "Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him." | And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him. |
John 11:16 | therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go we also, that we may die with him,` | "Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him." | Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death. |
John 11:17 | Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb. | On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb. | Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before. |
John 11:18 | And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off, | Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles; | Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away; |
John 11:19 | and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother; | and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother. | And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother. |
John 11:20 | Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house. | Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house. | When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house. |
John 11:21 | Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; | So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died. | Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. |
John 11:22 | but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;` | And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you." | But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you. |
John 11:23 | Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.` | "Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus. | Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again. |
John 11:24 | Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;` | "I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day." | Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day. |
John 11:25 | Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live; | "I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live; | Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead; |
John 11:26 | and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die to the age; | and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?" | And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith? |
John 11:27 | believest thou this?` she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.` | "Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." | She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. |
John 11:28 | And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;` | After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you." | And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you. |
John 11:29 | she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him; | So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him. | And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him. |
John 11:30 | and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him; | Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him. | Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him. |
John 11:31 | the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.` | So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there. | Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there. |
John 11:32 | Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;` | Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." | When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. |
John 11:33 | Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said, | Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit, | And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled, |
John 11:34 | `Where have ye laid him?` they say to him, `Sir, come and see;` | though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply. | And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord. |
John 11:35 | Jesus wept. | Jesus wept. | And Jesus himself was weeping. |
John 11:36 | The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!` | "See how dear he held him," said the Jews. | So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him! |
John 11:37 | and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?` | But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?" | But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death? |
John 11:38 | Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it, | Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it. | So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening. |
John 11:39 | Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;` the sister of him who hath died Martha saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;` | "Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died." | Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days. |
John 11:40 | Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?` | "Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?" | Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God? |
John 11:41 | They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me; | So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me. | So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me. |
John 11:42 | and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said [it], that they may believe that Thou didst send me.` | I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this that they may believe that Thou didst send me." | I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me. |
John 11:43 | And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;` | After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." | Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! |
John 11:44 | and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.` | The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free." | And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go. |
John 11:45 | Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him; | Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds became believers in Him; | Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him. |
John 11:46 | but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did; | though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done. | But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done. |
John 11:47 | the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs? | Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles. | Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs. |
John 11:48 | if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.` | If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation." | If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation. |
John 11:49 | and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything, | But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it. | But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything; |
John 11:50 | nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.` | You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish." | You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction. |
John 11:51 | And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation, | It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation, | He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation; |
John 11:52 | and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one. | and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God. | And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world. |
John 11:53 | From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him; | So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death. | And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death. |
John 11:54 | Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples. | Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples. | So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples. |
John 11:55 | And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves; | The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. | Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover. |
John 11:56 | they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you that he may not come to the feast?` | They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? will he come to the Festival at all?" | They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast? |
John 11:57 | and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew [it], so that they may seize him. | Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him. | Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him. |
