John 12:1 | Jesus, therefore, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where was Lazarus, who had died, whom he raised out of the dead; | Jesus, however, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was whom He had raised from the dead. | Jesus therefore, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where was the dead [man] Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from among [the] dead. |
John 12:2 | they made, therefore, to him a supper there, and Martha was ministering, and Lazarus was one of those reclining together (at meat) with him; | So they gave a dinner there in honour of Jesus, at which Martha waited at table, but Lazarus was one of the guests who were with Him. | There therefore they made him a supper, and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those at table with him. |
John 12:3 | Mary, therefore, having taken a pound of ointment of spikenard, of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus and did wipe with her hair his feet, and the house was filled from the fragrance of the ointment. | Availing herself of the opportunity, Mary took a pound weight of pure spikenard, very costly, and poured it over His feet, and wiped His feet with her hair, so that the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. | Mary therefore, having taken a pound of ointment of pure nard of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. |
John 12:4 | Therefore saith one of his disciples Judas Iscariot, of Simon, who is about to deliver him up | Then said Judas (the Iscariot, one of the Twelve the one who afterwards betrayed Jesus), | One of his disciples therefore, Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote, who was about to deliver him up, says, |
John 12:5 | `Wherefore was not this ointment sold for three hundred denaries, and given to the poor?` | "Why was not that perfume sold for 300 shillings and the money given to the poor?" | Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? |
John 12:6 | and he said this, not because he was caring for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and what things were put in he was carrying. | The reason he said this was not that he cared for the poor, but that he was a thief, and that being in charge of the money-box, he used to steal what was put into it. | But he said this, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the bag, and carried what was put into [it]. |
John 12:7 | Jesus, therefore, said, `Suffer her; for the day of my embalming she hath kept it, | But Jesus interposed. "Do not blame her," He said, "allow her to have kept it for the time of my preparation for burial. | Jesus therefore said, Suffer her to have kept this for the day of my preparation for burial; |
John 12:8 | for the poor ye have always with yourselves, and me ye have not always.` | For the poor you always have with you, but you have not me always." | for ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always. |
John 12:9 | A great multitude, therefore, of the Jews knew that he is there, and they came, not because of Jesus only, but that Lazarus also they may see, whom he raised out of the dead; | Now it became widely known among the Jews that Jesus was there; but they came not only on His account, but also in order to see Lazarus whom He had brought back to life. | A great crowd therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but also that they might see Lazarus whom he raised from among [the] dead. |
John 12:10 | and the chief priests took counsel, that also Lazarus they may kill, | The High Priests, however, consulted together to put Lazarus also to death, | But the chief priests took counsel that they might kill Lazarus also, |

John 12:13 | took the branches of the palms, and went forth to meet him, and were crying, `Hosanna, blessed [is] he who is coming in the name of the Lord the king of Israel;` | took branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, shouting as they went, "God save him! Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord even on the King of Israel!" | took branches of palms and went out to meet him, and cried, Hosanna, blessed [is] he that comes in the name of [the] Lord, the King of Israel. |
John 12:14 | and Jesus having found a young ass did sit upon it, according as it is written, | And Jesus, having procured a young ass, sat upon it, just as the Scripture says, | And Jesus, having found a young ass, sat upon it; as it is written, |
John 12:15 | `Fear not, daughter of Sion, lo, thy king doth come, sitting on an ass` colt.` | "Fear not, Daughter of Zion! See, thy King is coming riding on an ass's colt." | Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. |
John 12:16 | And these things his disciples did not know at the first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were having been written about him, and these things they did to him. | The meaning of this His disciples did not understand at the time; but after Jesus was glorified they recollected that this was written about Him, and that they had done this to Him. | [Now] his disciples knew not these things at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him. |
John 12:17 | The multitude, therefore, who are with him, were testifying that he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and did raise him out of the dead; | The large number of people, however, who had been present when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and brought him back to life, related what they had witnessed. | The crowd therefore that was with him bore witness because he had called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from among [the] dead. |
John 12:18 | because of this also did the multitude meet him, because they heard of his having done this sign, | This was also why the crowd came to meet Him, because they had heard of His having performed that miracle. | Therefore also the crowd met him because they had heard that he had done this sign. |
John 12:19 | the Pharisees, therefore, said among themselves, `Ye see that ye do not gain anything, lo, the world did go after him.` | The result was that the Pharisees said among themselves, "Observe how idle all your efforts are! The world is gone after him!" | The Pharisees therefore said to one another, Ye see that ye profit nothing: behold, the world is gone after him. |
John 12:20 | And there were certain Greeks out of those coming up that they may worship in the feast, | Now some of those who used to come up to worship at the Festival were Greeks. | And there were certain Greeks among those who came up that they might worship in the feast; |

John 12:24 | verily, verily, I say to you, if the grain of the wheat, having fallen to the earth, may not die, itself remaineth alone; and if it may die, it doth bear much fruit; | In most solemn truth I tell you that unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains what it was a single grain; but that if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. | Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except the grain of wheat falling into the ground die, it abides alone; but if it die, it bears much fruit. |
John 12:25 | he who is loving his life shall lose it, and he who is hating his life in this world to life age-during shall keep it; | He who holds his life dear, is destroying it; and he who makes his life of no account in this world shall keep it to the Life of the Ages. | He that loves his life shall lose it, and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it to life eternal. |
John 12:26 | if any one may minister to me, let him follow me, and where I am, there also my ministrant shall be; and if any one may minister to me honour him will the Father. | If a man wishes to be my servant, let him follow me; and where I am, there too shall my servant be. If a man wishes to be my servant, the Father will honour him. | If any one serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall be *my* servant. [And] if any one serve me, him shall the Father honour. |
John 12:27 | `Now hath my soul been troubled, and what? shall I say Father, save me from this hour? but because of this I came to this hour; | Now is my soul full of trouble; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this purpose I have come to this hour. | Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But on account of this have I come to this hour. |
John 12:28 | Father, glorify Thy name.` There came, therefore, a voice out of the heaven, `I both glorified, and again I will glorify [it];` | Father, glorify Thy name." Thereupon there came a voice from the sky, "I have glorified it and will also glorify it again." | Father, glorify thy name. There came therefore a voice out of heaven, I both have glorified and will glorify [it] again. |
John 12:29 | the multitude, therefore, having stood and heard, were saying that there hath been thunder; others said, `A messenger hath spoken to him.` | The crowd that stood by and heard it, said that there had been thunder. Others said, "An angel spoke to him." | The crowd therefore, which stood [there] and heard [it], said that it had thundered. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. |
John 12:30 | Jesus answered and said, `Not because of me hath this voice come, but because of you; | "It is not for my sake," said Jesus, "that that voice came, but for your sakes. | Jesus answered and said, Not on my account has this voice come, but on yours. |
John 12:31 | now is a judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast forth; | Now is a judgement of this world: now will the Prince of this world be driven out. | Now is [the] judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out: |
John 12:32 | and I, if I may be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.` | And I if I am lifted up from the earth will draw all men to me." | and I, if I be lifted up out of the earth, will draw all to me. |
John 12:33 | And this he said signifying by what death he was about to die; | He said this to indicate the kind of death He would die. | But this he said signifying by what death he was about to die. |
John 12:34 | the multitude answered him, `We heard out of the law that the Christ doth remain to the age; and how dost thou say, That it behoveth the Son of Man to be lifted up? who is this the Son of Man?` | The crowd answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ remains for ever. In what sense do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is that Son of Man?" | The crowd answered him, We have heard out of the law that the Christ abides for ever; and how sayest thou that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who *is* this, the Son of man? |
John 12:35 | Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Yet a little time is the light with you; walk while ye have the light, that darkness may not overtake you; and he who is walking in the darkness hath not known where he goeth; | "Yet a little while," He replied, "the light is among you. Be faithful to the light that you have, for fear darkness should overtake you; for a man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. | Jesus therefore said to them, Yet a little while is the light amongst you. Walk while ye have the light, that darkness may not overtake you. And he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. |
John 12:36 | while ye have the light, believe in the light, that sons of light ye may become.` These things spake Jesus, and having gone away, he was hid from them, | In the degree that you have light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light." Jesus said this, and went away and hid Himself from them. | While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may become sons of light. Jesus said these things, and going away hid himself from them. |
John 12:37 | yet he having done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him, | But though He had performed such great miracles in their presence, they did not believe in Him | But though he had done so many signs before them, they believed not on him, |
John 12:38 | that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, `Lord, who gave credence to our report? and the arm of the Lord to whom was it revealed?` | in order that the words of Isaiah the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Lord, who has believed our preaching? And the arm of the Lord to whom has it been unveiled?" | that the word of the prophet Esaias which he said might be fulfilled, Lord, who has believed our report? and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? |
John 12:39 | Because of this they were not able to believe, that again Isaiah said, | For this reason they were unable to believe because Isaiah said again, | On this account they could not believe, because Esaias said again, |
John 12:40 | `He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn back, and I might heal them;` | "He has blinded their eyes and made their minds callous, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their minds, and should turn, and I should heal them." | He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they may not see with their eyes, and understand with their heart and be converted, and I should heal them. |
John 12:41 | these things said Isaiah, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. | Isaiah uttered these words because he saw His glory; and he spoke of Him. | These things said Esaias because he saw his glory and spoke of him. |
John 12:42 | Still, however, also out of the rulers did many believe in him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, that they might not be put out of the synagogue, | Nevertheless even from among the Rulers many believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not avow their belief, for fear they should be shut out from the synagogue. | Although indeed from among the rulers also many believed on him, but on account of the Pharisees did not confess [him], that they might not be put out of the synagogue: |
John 12:43 | for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God. | For they loved the glory that comes from men rather than the glory that comes from God. | for they loved glory from men rather than glory from God. |
John 12:44 | And Jesus cried and said, `He who is believing in me, doth not believe in me, but in Him who sent me; | But Jesus cried aloud, "He who believes in me, believes not so much in me, as in Him who sent me; | But Jesus cried and said, He that believes on me, believes not on me, but on him that sent me; |
John 12:45 | and he who is beholding me, doth behold Him who sent me; | and he who sees me sees Him who sent me. | and he that beholds me, beholds him that sent me. |
John 12:46 | I a light to the world have come, that every one who is believing in me in the darkness may not remain; | I have come like light into the world, in order that no one who believes in me may remain in the dark. | I am come into the world [as] light, that every one that believes on me may not abide in darkness; |
John 12:47 | and if any one may hear my sayings, and not believe, I I do not judge him, for I came not that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world. | And if any one hears my teachings and regards them not, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. | and if any one hear my words and do not keep [them], I judge him not, for I am not come that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world. |
John 12:48 | `He who is rejecting me, and not receiving my sayings, hath one who is judging him, the word that I spake, that will judge him in the last day, | He who sets me at naught and does not receive my teachings is not left without a judge: the Message which I have spoken will judge him on the last day. | He that rejects me and does not receive my words, has him who judges him: the word which I have spoken, that shall judge him in the last day. |
John 12:49 | because I spake not from myself, but the Father who sent me, He did give me a command, what I may say, and what I may speak, | Because I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me, Himself gave me a command what to say and in what words to speak. | For I have not spoken from myself, but the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what I should say and what I should speak; |
John 12:50 | and I have known that His command is life age-during; what, therefore, I speak, according as the Father hath said to me, so I speak.` | And I know that His command is the Life of the Ages. What therefore I speak, I speak just as the Father has bidden me." | and I know that his commandment is life eternal. What therefore I speak, as the Father has said to me, so I speak. |
