Matthew 6:1 | `Take heed your kindness not to do before men, to be seen by them, and if not reward ye have not from your Father who [is] in the heavens; | "But beware of doing your good actions in the sight of men, in order to attract their gaze; if you do, there is no reward for you with your Father who is in Heaven. | Take heed not to do your alms before men to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens. |
Matthew 6:2 | whenever, therefore, thou mayest do kindness, thou mayest not sound a trumpet before thee as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory from men; verily I say to you they have their reward! | `When you give in charity, never blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and streets in order that their praises may be sung by men. I solemnly tell you that they already have their reward. | When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. |
Matthew 6:3 | `But thou, doing kindness, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth, | But when you are giving in charity, let not your left hand perceive what your right hand is doing, | But thou, when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand does; |
Matthew 6:4 | that thy kindness may be in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret Himself shall reward thee manifestly. | that your charities may be in secret; and then your Father He who sees in secret will recompense you. | so that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee. |
Matthew 6:5 | `And when thou mayest pray, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites, because they love in the synagogues, and in the corners of the broad places standing to pray, that they may be seen of men; verily I say to you, that they have their reward. | "And when praying, you must not be like the hypocrites. They are fond of standing and praying in the synagogues or at the corners of the wider streets, in order that men may see them. I solemnly tell you that they already have their reward. | And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets so that they should appear to men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. |
Matthew 6:6 | `But thou, when thou mayest pray, go into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who [is] in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret, shall reward thee manifestly. | But you, whenever you pray, go into your own room and shut the door: then pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father He who sees in secret will recompense you. | But *thou*, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee. |
Matthew 6:7 | `And praying ye may not use vain repetitions like the nations, for they think that in their much speaking they shall be heard, | "And when praying, do not use needless repetitions as the Gentiles do, for they expect to be listened to because of their multitude of words. | But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as those who are of the nations: for they think they shall be heard through their much speaking. |
Matthew 6:8 | be ye not therefore like to them, for your Father doth know those things that ye have need of before your asking him; | Do not, however, imitate them; for your Father knows what things you need before ever you ask Him. | Be not ye therefore like them, for your Father knows of what things ye have need before ye beg [anything] of him. |
Matthew 6:9 | thus therefore pray ye: `Our Father who [art] in the heavens! hallowed be Thy name. | "In this manner therefore pray: `Our Father who art in Heaven, may Thy name be kept holy; | Thus therefore pray *ye*: Our Father who art in the heavens, let thy name be sanctified, |
Matthew 6:10 | `Thy reign come: Thy will come to pass, as in heaven also on the earth. | let Thy kingdom come; let Thy will be done, as in Heaven so on earth; | let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done as in heaven so upon the earth; |
Matthew 6:11 | `Our appointed bread give us to-day. | give us to-day our bread for the day; | give us to-day our needed bread, |
Matthew 6:12 | `And forgive us our debts, as also we forgive our debtors. | and forgive us our shortcomings, as we also have forgiven those who have failed in their duty towards us; | and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors, |
Matthew 6:13 | `And mayest Thou not lead us to temptation, but deliver us from the evil, because Thine is the reign, and the power, and the glory to the ages. Amen. | and bring us not into temptation, but rescue us from the Evil one.' | and lead us not into temptation, but save us from evil. |
Matthew 6:14 | `For, if ye may forgive men their trespasses He also will forgive you your Father who [is] in the heavens; | "For if you forgive others their offences, your Heavenly Father will forgive you also; | For if ye forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father also will forgive you [yours], |
Matthew 6:15 | but if ye may not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. | but if you do not forgive others their offences, neither will your Father forgive yours. | but if ye do not forgive men their offences, neither will your Father forgive your offences. |
Matthew 6:16 | `And when ye may fast, be ye not as the hypocrites, of sour countenances, for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men fasting; verily I say to you, that they have their reward. | "When any of you fast, never assume gloomy looks as the hypocrites do; for they disfigure their faces in order that it may be evident to men that they are fasting. I solemnly tell you that they already have their reward. | And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, downcast in countenance; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear fasting to men: verily I say unto you, They have their reward. |
Matthew 6:17 | `But thou, fasting, anoint thy head, and wash thy face, | But, whenever you fast, pour perfume on your hair and wash your face, | But *thou*, [when] fasting, anoint thy head and wash thy face, |
Matthew 6:18 | that thou mayest not appear to men fasting, but to thy Father who [is] in secret, and thy Father, who is seeing in secret, shall reward thee manifestly. | that it may not be apparent to men that you are fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father He who sees in secret will recompense you. | so that thou mayest not appear fasting unto men, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall render [it] to thee. |
Matthew 6:19 | `Treasure not up to yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust disfigure, and where thieves break through and steal, | "Do not lay up stores of wealth for yourselves on earth, where the moth and wear-and-tear destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. | Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal; |
Matthew 6:20 | but treasure up to yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth disfigure, and where thieves do not break through nor steal, | But amass wealth for yourselves in Heaven, where neither the moth nor wear-and-tear destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal. | but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust spoils, and where thieves do not dig through nor steal; |
Matthew 6:21 | for where your treasure is, there will be also your heart. | For where your wealth is, there also will your heart be. | for where thy treasure is, there will be also thy heart. |
Matthew 6:22 | `The lamp of the body is the eye, if, therefore, thine eye may be perfect, all thy body shall be enlightened, | "The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eyesight is good, your whole body will be well lighted; | The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body will be light: |
Matthew 6:23 | but if thine eye may be evil, all thy body shall be dark; if, therefore, the light that [is] in thee is darkness the darkness, how great! | but if your eyesight is bad, your whole body will be dark. If however the very light within you is darkness, how dense must the darkness be! | but if thine eye be wicked, thy whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness! |
Matthew 6:24 | `None is able to serve two lords, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to the one, and despise the other; ye are not able to serve God and Mammon. | "No man can be the bondservant of two masters; for either he will dislike one and like the other, or he will attach himself to one and think slightingly of the other. You cannot be the bondservants both of God and of gold. | No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and will love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. |
Matthew 6:25 | `Because of this I say to you, be not anxious for your life, what ye may eat, and what ye may drink, nor for your body, what ye may put on. Is not the life more than the nourishment, and the body than the clothing? | For this reason I charge you not to be over-anxious about your lives, inquiring what you are to eat or what you are to drink, nor yet about your bodies, inquiring what clothes you are to put on. Is not the life more precious than its food, and the body than its clothing? | For this cause I say unto you, Do not be careful about your life, what ye should eat and what ye should drink; nor for your body what ye should put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment? |
Matthew 6:26 | look to the fowls of the heaven, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into storehouses, and your heavenly Father doth nourish them; are not ye much better than they? | Look at the birds which fly in the air: they do not sow or reap or store up in barns, but your Heavenly Father feeds them: are not you of much greater value than they? | Look at the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into granaries, and your heavenly Father nourishes them. Are *ye* not much more excellent than they? |
Matthew 6:27 | `And who of you, being anxious, is able to add to his age one cubit? | Which of you by being over-anxious can add a single foot to his height? | But which of you by carefulness can add to his growth one cubit? |
Matthew 6:28 | and about clothing why are ye anxious? consider well the lilies of the field; how do they grow? they do not labour, nor do they spin; | And why be anxious about clothing? Learn a lesson from the wild lilies. Watch their growth. They neither toil nor spin, | And why are ye careful about clothing? Observe with attention the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; |
Matthew 6:29 | and I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these. | and yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his magnificence could array himself like one of these. | but I say unto you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these. |
Matthew 6:30 | `And if the herb of the field, that to-day is, and to-morrow is cast to the furnace, God doth so clothe not much more you, O ye of little faith? | And if God so clothes the wild herbage which to-day flourishes and to-morrow is thrown into the oven, is it not much more certain that He will clothe you, you men of little faith? | But if God so clothe the herbage of the field, which is to-day, and to-morrow is cast into [the] oven, will he not much rather you, O [ye] of little faith? |
Matthew 6:31 | therefore ye may not be anxious, saying, What may we eat? or, What may we drink? or, What may we put round? | Do not be over-anxious, therefore, asking `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?' | Be not therefore careful, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we put on? |
Matthew 6:32 | for all these do the nations seek for, for your heavenly Father doth know that ye have need of all these; | For all these are questions that Gentiles are always asking; but your Heavenly Father knows that you need these things all of them. | for all these things the nations seek after; for your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things. |
Matthew 6:33 | but seek ye first the reign of God and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you. | But make His Kingdom and righteousness your chief aim, and then these things shall all be given you in addition. | But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. |
Matthew 6:34 | Be not therefore anxious for the morrow, for the morrow shall be anxious for its own things; sufficient for the day [is] the evil of it. | Do not be over-anxious, therefore, about to-morrow, for to-morrow will bring its own cares. Enough for each day are its own troubles. | Be not careful therefore for the morrow, for the morrow shall be careful about itself. Sufficient to the day [is] its own evil. |
