Acts 5:1And a certain man, Ananias by name, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,There was a man of the name of Ananias who, with his wife Sapphira, sold some property but,But a certain man named Ananias, with Saphira his wife, sold a piece of land,
Acts 5:2and did keep back of the price his wife also knowing and having brought a certain part, at the feet of the apostles he laid [it].with her full knowledge and consent, dishonestly kept back part of the price which he received for it, though he brought the rest and gave it to the Apostles. And by fraud kept back part of the price of the land, his wife being privy thereunto: and bringing a certain part of it, laid it at the feet of the apostles.
Acts 5:3And Peter said, `Ananias, wherefore did the Adversary fill thy heart, for thee to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back of the price of the place?"Ananias," said Peter, "why has Satan taken possession of your heart, that you should try to deceive the Holy Spirit and dishonestly keep back part of the price paid you for this land? But Peter said: Ananias, why hath Satan tempted thy heart, that thou shouldst lie to the Holy Ghost, and by fraud keep part of the price of the land?
Acts 5:4while it remained, did it not remain thine? and having been sold, in thy authority was it not? why [is] it that thou didst put in thy heart this thing? thou didst not lie to men, but to God;`While it remained unsold, was not the land your own? And when sold, was it not at your own disposal? How is it that you have cherished this design in your heart? It is not to men you have told this lie, but to God."Whilst it remained, did it not remain to thee? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God.
Acts 5:5and Ananias hearing these words, having fallen down, did expire, and great fear came upon all who heard these things,Upon hearing these words Ananias fell down dead, and all who heard the words were awe-struck.And Ananias hearing these words, fell down, and gave up the ghost. And there came great fear upon all that heard it.
Acts 5:6and having risen, the younger men wound him up, and having carried forth, they buried [him].The younger men, however, rose, and wrapping the body up, carried it out and buried it.And the young men rising up, removed him, and carrying him out, buried him.
Acts 5:7And it came to pass, about three hours after, that his wife, not knowing what hath happened, came in,About three hours had passed, when his wife came in, knowing nothing of what had happened. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.
Acts 5:8and Peter answered her, `Tell me if for so much ye sold the place;` and she said, `Yes, for so much.`Peter at once questioned her. "Tell me," he said, "whether you sold the land for so much." "Yes," she replied, "for so much."And Peter said to her: Tell me, woman, whether you sold the land for so much? And she said: Yea, for so much.
Acts 5:9And Peter said unto her, `How was it agreed by you, to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? lo, the feet of those who did bury thy husband [are] at the door, and they shall carry thee forth;`"How was it," replied Peter, "that you two agreed to try an experiment upon the Spirit of the Lord? The men who have buried your husband are already at the door, and they will carry you out."And Peter said unto her: Why have you agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold the feet of them who have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.
Acts 5:10and she fell down presently at his feet, and expired, and the young men having come in, found her dead, and having carried forth, they buried [her] by her husband;Instantly she fell down dead at his feet, and the young men came in and found her dead. So they carried her out and buried her by her husband's side.Immediately she fell down before his feet, and gave up the ghost. And the young men coming in, found her dead: and carried her out, and buried her by her husband.
Acts 5:11and great fear came upon all the assembly, and upon all who heard these things. This incident struck terror into the whole Church, and into the hearts of all who heard of it.And there came great fear upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things.
Acts 5:12And through the hands of the apostles came many signs and wonders among the people, and they were with one accord all in the porch of Solomon; Many signs and marvels continued to be done among the people by the Apostles; and by common consent they all met in Solomon's Portico. And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
Acts 5:13and of the rest no one was daring to join himself to them, but the people were magnifying them,But none of the others dared to attach themselves to them. Yet the people held them in high honourBut of the rest no man durst join himself unto them; but the people magnified them.
Acts 5:14(and the more were believers added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women,)and more and more believers in the Lord joined them, including great numbers both of men and womenAnd the multitude of men and women who believed in the Lord, was more increased:
Acts 5:15so as into the broad places to bring forth the ailing, and to lay [them] upon couches and mats, that at the coming of Peter, even [his] shadow might overshadow some one of them;so that they would even bring out their sick friends into the streets and lay them on light couches or mats, in order that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or other of them.Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that when Peter came, his shadow at the least, might overshadow any of them, and they might be delivered from their infirmities.
Acts 5:16and there were coming together also the people of the cities round about to Jerusalem, bearing ailing persons, and those harassed by unclean spirits who were all healed. The inhabitants, too, of the towns in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem came in crowds, bringing sick persons and some who were harassed by foul spirits, and they were cured, one and all.And there came also together to Jerusalem a multitude out of the neighboring cities, bringing sick persons, and such as were troubled with unclean spirits; who were all healed.
Acts 5:17And having risen, the chief priest, and all those with him being the sect of the Sadducees were filled with zeal,This roused the High Priest. He and all his party the sect of the Sadducees were filled with angry jealousyThen the high prist rising up, and all they that were with him, (which is the heresy of the Sadducees,) were filled with envy.
Acts 5:18and laid their hands upon the apostles, and did put them in a public prison;and laid hands upon the Apostles, and put them into the public jail. And they laid hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.
Acts 5:19and a messenger of the Lord through the night opened the doors of the prison, having also brought them forth, he said,But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,But an angel of the Lord by night opening the doors of the prison, and leading them out, said:
Acts 5:20`Go on, and standing, speak in the temple to the people all the sayings of this life;`"Go and stand in the Temple, and go on proclaiming to the people all this Message of Life."Go, and standing speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
Acts 5:21and having heard, they did enter at the dawn into the temple, and were teaching. And the chief priest having come, and those with him, they called together the sanhedrim and all the senate of the sons of Israel, and they sent to the prison to have them brought,Having received that command they went into the Temple, just before daybreak, and began to teach: So when the High Priest and his party came, and had called together the Sanhedrin as well as all the Elders of the descendants of Israel, they sent to the jail to fetch the Apostles.Who having heard this, early in the morning, entered into the temple, and taught. And the high priest coming, and they that were with him, called together the council, and all the ancients of the children of Israel; and they sent to the prison to have them brought.
Acts 5:22and the officers having come, did not find them in the prison, and having turned back, they told,But the officers went and could not find them in the prison. So they came back and brought word,But when the ministers came, and opening the prison, found them not there, they returned and told,
Acts 5:23saying `The prison indeed we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors, and having opened within we found no one.`saying, "The jail we found quite safely locked, and the warders were on guard at the doors, but upon going in we found no one there."Saying: The prison indeed we found shut with all diligence, and the keepers standing before the doors; but opening it, we found no man within.
Acts 5:24And as the priest, and the magistrate of the temple, and the chief priests, heard these words, they were doubting concerning them to what this would come; When the Commander of the Temple Guards and the High Priests heard this statement, they were utterly at a loss with regard to it, wondering what would happen next. Now when the officer of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were in doubt concerning them, what would come to pass.
Acts 5:25and coming near, a certain one told them, saying `Lo, the men whom ye did put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people;`And some one came and brought them word, saying, "The men you put in prison are actually in the Temple, standing there, teaching the people."But one came and told them: Behold, the men whom you put in prison are in the temple standing, and teaching the people.
Acts 5:26then the magistrate having gone away with officers, brought them without violence, for they were fearing the people, lest they should be stoned;Upon this the Commander went with the officers, and brought the Apostles; but without using violence; for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. Then went the officer with the ministers, and brought them without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.
Acts 5:27and having brought them, they set [them] in the sanhedrim, and the chief priest questioned them,So they brought them and made them stand in front of the Sanhedrin. And then the High Priest questioned them. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,
Acts 5:28saying, `Did not we strictly command you not to teach in this name? and lo, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and ye intend to bring upon us the blood of this man.`"We strictly forbad you to teach in that name did we not?" he said. "And see, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and are trying to make us responsible for that man's death!"Saying: Commanding we commanded you, that you should not teach in this name; and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and you have a mind to bring the blood of this man upon us.
Acts 5:29And Peter and the apostles answering, said, `To obey God it behoveth, rather than men;Peter and the other Apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than man.But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men.
Acts 5:30and the God of our fathers did raise up Jesus, whom ye slew, having hanged upon a tree; The God of our forefathers has raised Jesus to life, whom you crucified and put to death. The God of our fathers hath raised up Jesus, whom you put to death, hanging him upon a tree.
Acts 5:31this one God, a Prince and a Saviour, hath exalted with His right hand, to give reformation to Israel, and forgiveness of sins;God has exalted Him to His right hand as Chief Leader and as Saviour, to give Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins.Him hath God exalted with his right hand, to be Prince and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.
Acts 5:32and we are His witnesses of these sayings, and the Holy Spirit also, whom God gave to those obeying him.`And we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him are witnesses as to these things."And we are witnesses of these things and the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to all that obey him.
Acts 5:33And they having heard, were cut [to the heart], and were taking counsel to slay them,Infuriated at getting this answer, they were disposed to kill the Apostles. When they had heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they thought to put them to death.
Acts 5:34but a certain one, having risen up in the sanhedrim a Pharisee, by name Gamaliel, a teacher of law honoured by all the people commanded to put the apostles forth a little,But a Pharisee of the name of Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, held in honour by all the people, rose from his seat and requested that they should be sent outside the court for a few minutes. But one in the council rising up, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, respected by all the people, commanded the men to be put forth a little while.
Acts 5:35and said unto them, `Men, Israelites, take heed to yourselves about these men, what ye are about to do,"Israelites," he said, "be careful what you are about to do in dealing with these men.And he said to them: Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do, as touching these men.
Acts 5:36for before these days rose up Theudas, saying, that himself was some one, to whom a number of men did join themselves, as it were four hundred, who was slain, and all, as many as were obeying him, were scattered, and came to nought.Years ago Theudas appeared, professing to be a person of importance, and a body of men, some four hundred in number, joined him. He was killed, and all his followers were dispersed and annihilated. For before these days rose up Theodas, affirming himself to be somebody, to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all that believed him were scattered, and brought to nothing.
Acts 5:37`After this one rose up, Judas the Galilean, in the days of the enrollment, and drew away much people after him, and that one perished, and all, as many as were obeying him, were scattered; After him, at the time of the Census, came Judas, the Galilaean, and was the leader in a revolt. He too perished, and all his followers were scattered. After this man, rose up Judas of Galilee, in the days of the enrolling, and drew away the people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as consented to him, were dispersed.
Acts 5:38and now I say to you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone, because if this counsel or this work may be of men, it will be overthrown,And now I tell you to hold aloof from these men and leave them alone for if this scheme or work is of human origin, it will come to nothing.And now, therefore, I say to you, refrain from these men, and let them alone; for if this council or this work be of men, it will come to nought;
Acts 5:39and if it be of God, ye are not able to overthrow it, lest perhaps also ye be found fighting against God.`But if it is really from God, you will be powerless to put them down lest perhaps you find yourselves to be actually fighting against God."But if it be of God, you cannot overthrow it, lest perhaps you be found even to fight against God. And they consented to him.
Acts 5:40And to him they agreed, and having called near the apostles, having beaten [them], they commanded [them] not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go;His advice carried conviction. So they called the Apostles in, and after flogging them ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then let them go.And calling in the apostles, after they had scourged them, they charged them that they should not speak at all in the name of Jesus; and they dismissed them.
Acts 5:41they, indeed, then, departed from the presence of the sanhedrim, rejoicing that for his name they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour,They, therefore, left the Sanhedrin and went their way, rejoicing that they had been deemed worthy to suffer disgrace on behalf of the NAME.And they indeed went from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were accounted worthy to suffer reproach for the name of Jesus.
Acts 5:42every day also in the temple, and in every house, they were not ceasing teaching and proclaiming good news Jesus the Christ. But they did not desist from teaching every day, in the Temple or in private houses, and telling the Good News about Jesus, the Christ. And every day they ceased not in the temple, and from house to house, to teach and preach Christ Jesus.
