James 2:1My brethren, hold not, in respect of persons, the faith of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ,My brethren, you must not make distinctions between one man and another while you are striving to maintain faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our glory.My brothers, don't hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons.
James 2:2for if there may come into your synagogue a man with gold ring, in gay raiment, and there may come in also a poor man in vile raiment,For suppose a man comes into one of your meetings wearing gold rings and fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man wearing shabby clothes,For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your assembly, and there come in also a poor man in filthy clothing;
James 2:3and ye may look upon him bearing the gay raiment, and may say to him, `Thou sit thou here well,` and to the poor man may say, `Thou stand thou there, or, Sit thou here under my footstool,`and you pay court to the one who wears the fine clothes, and say, "Sit here; this is a good place;" while to the poor man you say, "Stand there, or sit on the floor at my feet;"and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, "Sit here in a good place;" and you tell the poor man, "Stand there," or "Sit by my footstool;"
James 2:4ye did not judge fully in yourselves, and did become ill-reasoning judges.is it not plain that in your hearts you have little faith, seeing that you have become judges full of wrong thoughts?haven't you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
James 2:5Hearken, my brethren beloved, did not God choose the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the reign that He promised to those loving Him?Listen, my dearly-loved brethren. Has not God chosen those whom the world regards as poor to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom which He has promised to those that love Him?Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn't God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to those who love him?
James 2:6and ye did dishonour the poor one; do not the rich oppress you and themselves draw you to judgment-seats;But *you* have put dishonour upon the poor man. Yet is it not the rich who grind you down? Are not they the very people who drag you into the Law courts?But you have dishonored the poor man. Don't the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?
James 2:7do they not themselves speak evil of the good name that was called upon you?and the very people who speak evil of the noble Name by which you are called?Don't they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?
James 2:8If, indeed, royal law ye complete, according to the Writing, `Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself,` ye do well;If, however, you are keeping the Law as supreme, in obedience to the Commandment which says "You are to love your fellow man just as you love yourself," you are acting rightly.However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well.
James 2:9and if ye accept persons, sin ye do work, being convicted by the law as transgressors;But if you are making distinctions between one man and another, you are guilty of sin, and are convicted by the Law as offenders.But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.
James 2:10for whoever the whole law shall keep, and shall stumble in one [point], he hath become guilty of all;A man who has kept the Law as a whole, but has failed to keep some one command, has become guilty of violating all.For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he has become guilty of all.
James 2:11for He who is saying, `Thou mayest not commit adultery,` said also, `Thou mayest do no murder;` and if thou shalt not commit adultery, and shalt commit murder, thou hast become a transgressor of law;For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder," and if you are a murderer, although not an adulterer, you have become an offender against the Law.For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," said also, "Do not commit murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
James 2:12so speak ye and so do, as about by a law of liberty to be judged,Speak and act as those should who are expecting to be judged by the Law of freedom.So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom.
James 2:13for the judgment without kindness [is] to him not having done kindness, and exult doth kindness over judgment.For he who shows no mercy will have judgement given against him without mercy; but mercy triumphs over judgement.For judgment is without mercy to him who has showed no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
James 2:14What [is] the profit, my brethren, if faith, any one may speak of having, and works he may not have? is that faith able to save him?What good is it, my brethren, if a man professes to have faith, and yet his actions do not correspond? Can such faith save him?What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can that faith save him?
James 2:15and if a brother or sister may be naked, and may be destitute of the daily food,Suppose a Christian brother or sister is poorly clad or lacks daily food,And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,
James 2:16and any one of you may say to them, `Depart ye in peace, be warmed, and be filled,` and may not give to them the things needful for the body, what [is] the profit?and one of you says to them, "I wish you well; keep yourselves warm and well fed," and yet you do not give them what they need; what is the use of that?and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you didn't give them the things the body needs, what good is it?
James 2:17so also the faith, if it may not have works, is dead by itself.So also faith, if it is unaccompanied by obedience, has no life in it so long as it stands alone.Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.
James 2:18But say may some one, Thou hast faith, and I have works, shew me thy faith out of thy works, and I will shew thee out of my works my faith:Nay, some one will say, "You have faith, I have actions: prove to me your faith apart from corresponding actions and I will prove mine to you by my actions.Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
James 2:19thou thou dost believe that God is one; thou dost well, and the demons believe, and they shudder!You believe that God is one, and you are quite right: evil spirits also believe this, and shudder."You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.
James 2:20And dost thou wish to know, O vain man, that the faith apart from the works is dead?But, idle boaster, are you willing to be taught how it is that faith apart from obedience is worthless? Take the case of Abraham our forefather.But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?
James 2:21Abraham our father was not he declared righteous out of works, having brought up Isaac his son upon the altar?Was it, or was it not, because of his actions that he was declared to be righteous as the result of his having offered up his son Isaac upon the altar?Wasn't Abraham, our father, justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
James 2:22dost thou see that the faith was working with his works, and out of the works the faith was perfected?You notice that his faith was co-operating with his actions, and that by his actions his faith was perfected;You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;
James 2:23and fulfilled was the Writing that is saying, `And Abraham did believe God, and it was reckoned to him to righteousness;` and, `Friend of God` he was called.and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And Abraham believed God, and his faith was placed to his credit as righteousness," and he received the name of `God's friend.'and the scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God.
James 2:24Ye see, then, that out of works is man declared righteous, and not out of faith only;You all see that it is because of actions that a man is pronounced righteous, and not simply because of faith.You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith.
James 2:25and in like manner also Rahab the harlot was she not out of works declared righteous, having received the messengers, and by another way having sent forth?In the same way also was not the notorious sinner Rahab declared to be righteous because of her actions when she welcomed the spies and hurriedly helped them to escape another way?In like manner wasn't Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
James 2:26for as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also the faith apart from the works is dead.For just as a human body without a spirit is lifeless, so also faith is lifeless if it is unaccompanied by obedience.For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
