John 13:1And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour hath come, that he may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who [are] in the world to the end he loved them. Now just before the Feast of the Passover this incident took place. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father; and having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his time had come that he would depart out of this world to his Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
John 13:2And supper being come, the devil already having put [it] into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver him up,While supper was proceeding, the Devil having by this time suggested to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, the thought of betraying Him, Jesus,After supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,
John 13:3Jesus knowing that all things the Father hath given to him into [his] hands, and that from God he came forth, and unto God he goeth, although He knew that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was now going to God,Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and was going to God,
John 13:4doth rise from the supper, and doth lay down his garments, and having taken a towel, he girded himself;rose from the table, threw off His upper garments, and took a towel and tied it round Him.arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
John 13:5afterward he putteth water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which he was being girded. Then He poured water into a basin, and proceeded to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel which He had put round Him.Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
John 13:6He cometh, therefore, unto Simon Peter, and that one saith to him, `Sir, thou dost thou wash my feet?`When He came to Simon Peter, Peter objected. "Master," he said, "are *you* going to wash my feet?"Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?"
John 13:7Jesus answered and said to him, `That which I do thou hast not known now, but thou shalt know after these things;`"What I am doing," answered Jesus, "for the present you do not know, but afterwards you shall know."Jesus answered him, "You don't know what I am doing now, but you will understand later."
John 13:8Peter saith to him, `Thou mayest not wash my feet to the age.` Jesus answered him, `If I may not wash thee, thou hast no part with me;`"Never, while the world lasts," said Peter, "shall you wash my feet." "If I do not wash you," replied Jesus, "you have no share with me."Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with me."
John 13:9Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.`"Master," said Peter, "wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!"
John 13:10Jesus saith to him, `He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;`"Any one who has lately bathed," said Jesus, "does not need to wash more than his feet, but is clean all over. And you my disciples are clean, and yet this is not true of all of you."Jesus said to him, "Someone who has bathed only needs to have their feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you."
John 13:11for he knew him who is delivering him up; because of this he said, `Ye are not all clean.`For He knew who was betraying Him, and that was why He said, "You are not all of you clean."For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, "You are not all clean."
John 13:12When, therefore, he washed their feet, and took his garments, having reclined (at meat) again, he said to them, `Do ye know what I have done to you?So after He had washed their feet, put on His garments again, and returned to the table, He said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you?So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?
John 13:13ye call me, The Teacher and The Lord, and ye say well, for I am;You call me `The Rabbi' and `The Master,' and rightly so, for such I am.You call me, 'Teacher' and 'Lord.' You say so correctly, for so I am.
John 13:14if then I did wash your feet the Lord and the Teacher ye also ought to wash one another`s feet.If I then, your Master and Rabbi, have washed your feet, it is also your duty to wash one another's feet.If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
John 13:15`For an example I gave to you, that, according as I did to you, ye also may do;For I have set you an example in order that you may do what I have done to you.For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
John 13:16verily, verily, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him;In most solemn truth I tell you that a servant is not superior to his master, nor is a messenger superior to him who sent him. Most assuredly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.
John 13:17if these things ye have known, happy are ye, if ye may do them;If you know all this, blessed are you if you act accordingly. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
John 13:18not concerning you all do I speak; I have known whom I chose for myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with me, did lift up against me his heel.I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but things are as they are in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says, `He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'I speak not of you all. I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.'
John 13:19`From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he];From this time forward I tell you things before they happen, in order that when they do happen you may believe that I am He.From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I AM.
John 13:20verily, verily, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, doth receive me; and he who is receiving me, doth receive Him who sent me.`In most solemn truth I tell you that he who receives whoever I send receives me, and that he who receives me receives Him who sent me."Most assuredly I tell you, he who receives whoever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me."
John 13:21These things having said, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and did testify, and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will deliver me up;`After speaking thus Jesus was troubled in spirit and said with deep earnestness, "In most solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me."When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified, "Most assuredly I tell you that one of you will betray me."
John 13:22the disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh. The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know to which of them He was referring. The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.
John 13:23And there was one of his disciples reclining (at meat) in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving; There was at table one of His disciples the one Jesus loved reclining with his head on Jesus's bosom. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus' breast.
John 13:24Simon Peter, then, doth beckon to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom he speaketh,Making a sign therefore to him, Simon Peter said, "Tell us to whom he is referring."Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks."
John 13:25and that one having leant back on the breast of Jesus, respondeth to him, `Sir, who is it?`So he, having his head on Jesus's bosom, leaned back and asked, "Master, who is it?"He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus' breast, asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
John 13:26Jesus answereth, `That one it is to whom I, having dipped the morsel, shall give it;` and having dipped the morsel, he giveth [it] to Judas of Simon, Iscariot."It is the one," answered Jesus, "for whom I shall dip this piece of bread and to whom I shall give it." Accordingly He dipped the piece of bread, and took it and gave it to Judas, the son of the Iscariot Simon.Jesus therefore answered, "It is he who I will give this morsel to when I have dipped it." So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
John 13:27And after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one, Jesus, therefore, saith to him, `What thou dost do quickly;`Then, after Judas had received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. "Lose no time about it," said Jesus to him. After the morsel, then Satan entered into him. Jesus therefore said to him, "What you do, do quickly."
John 13:28and none of those reclining at meat knew for what intent he said this to him,But why He said this no one else at the table understood. Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him.
John 13:29for certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus saith to him, `Buy what we have need of for the feast;` or that he may give something to the poor; Some, however, supposed that because Judas had the money-box Jesus meant, "Buy what we require for the Festival," or that he should give something to the poor. For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, "Buy what things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.
John 13:30having received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night. So Judas took the piece of bread and immediately went out. And it was night. Therefore, having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.
John 13:31When, therefore, he went forth, Jesus saith, `Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in him;So when he was gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.
John 13:32if God was glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself; yea, immediately He will glorify him. Moreover God will glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him without delay. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.
John 13:33`Little children, yet a little am I with you; ye will seek me, and, according as I said to the Jews Whither I go away, ye are not able to come, to you also I do say [it] now.Dear children, I am still with you a little longer. You will seek me, but, as I said to the Jews, `Where I am going you cannot come,' so for the present I say to you.Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you can't come,' so now I tell you.
John 13:34`A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; according as I did love you, that ye also love one another;A new commandment I give you, to love one another; that as I have loved you, you also may love one another.A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another.
John 13:35in this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye may have love one to another.`It is by this that every one will know that you are my disciples if you love one another."By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
John 13:36Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, whither dost thou go away?` Jesus answered him, `Whither I go away, thou art not able now to follow me, but afterward thou shalt follow me.`"Master," inquired Simon Peter, "where are you going?" "Where I am going," replied Jesus, "you cannot be my follower now, but you shall be later."Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you can't follow now, but you will follow afterwards."
John 13:37Peter saith to him, `Sir, wherefore am I not able to follow thee now? my life for thee I will lay down;`"Master," asked Peter again, "why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life on your behalf.Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you even now? I will lay down my life for you."
John 13:38Jesus answered him, `Thy life for me thou wilt lay down! verily, verily, I say to thee, a cock will not crow till thou mayest deny me thrice.`"You say you will lay down your life on my behalf!" said Jesus; "in most solemn truth I tell you that the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me."Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for me? Most assuredly I tell you, the rooster won't crow until you have denied me three times.
