Romans 13:1 | Let every soul to the higher authorities be subject, for there is no authority except from God, and the authorities existing are appointed by God, | Let every individual be obedient to those who rule over him; for no one is a ruler except by God's permission, and our present rulers have had their rank and power assigned to them by Him. | Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who be are ordained by God. |
Romans 13:2 | so that he who is setting himself against the authority, against God`s ordinance hath resisted; and those resisting, to themselves shall receive judgment. | Therefore the man who rebels against his ruler is resisting God's will; and those who thus resist will bring punishment upon themselves. | Therefore he who resists the authority, withstands the ordinance of God; and those who withstand will receive to themselves judgment. |
Romans 13:3 | For those ruling are not a terror to the good works, but to the evil; and dost thou wish not to be afraid of the authority? that which is good be doing, and thou shalt have praise from it, | For judges and magistrates are to be feared not by right-doers but by wrong-doers. You desire do you not? to have no reason to fear your ruler. Well, do the thing that is right, and then he will commend you. | For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Do you desire to have no fear of the authority? Do that which is good, and you will have praise from the same, |
Romans 13:4 | for of God it is a ministrant to thee for good; and if that which is evil thou mayest do, be fearing, for not in vain doth it bear the sword; for of God it is a ministrant, an avenger for wrath to him who is doing that which is evil. | For he is God's servant for your benefit. But if you do what is wrong, be afraid. He does not wear the sword to no purpose: he is God's servant an administrator to inflict punishment upon evil-doers. | for he is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he doesn't bear the sword in vain; for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil. |
Romans 13:5 | Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only because of the wrath, but also because of the conscience, | We must obey therefore, not only in order to escape punishment, but also for conscience' sake. | Therefore you need to be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake. |
Romans 13:6 | for because of this also pay ye tribute; for servants of God they are, on this very thing attending continually; | Why, this is really the reason you pay taxes; for tax-gatherers are ministers of God, devoting their energies to this very work. | For this reason you also pay taxes, for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually on this very thing. |
Romans 13:7 | render, therefore, to all [their] dues; to whom tribute, the tribute; to whom custom, the custom; to whom fear, the fear; to whom honour, the honour. | Pay promptly to all men what is due to them: taxes to those to whom taxes are due, toll to those to whom toll is due, respect to those to whom respect is due, honour to those to whom honour is due. | Give therefore to everyone what you owe: taxes to whom taxes are due; customs to whom customs; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor. |
Romans 13:8 | To no one owe anything, except to love one another; for he who is loving the other law he hath fulfilled, | Owe nothing to any one except mutual love; for he who loves his fellow man has satisfied the demands of Law. | Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. |
Romans 13:9 | for, `Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false testimony, Thou shalt not covet;` and if there is any other command, in this word it is summed up, in this: `Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;` | For the precepts, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," "Thou shalt do no murder," "Thou shalt not steal," "Thou shalt not covet," and all other precepts, are summed up in this one command, "Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thou lovest thyself." | For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not give false testimony," "You shall not covet," and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." |
Romans 13:10 | the love to the neighbor doth work no ill; the love, therefore, [is] the fulness of law. | Love avoids doing any wrong to one's fellow man, and is therefore complete obedience to Law. | Love doesn't harm his neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law. |
Romans 13:11 | And this, knowing the time, that for us, the hour already [is] to be aroused out of sleep, for now nearer [is] our salvation than when we did believe; | Carry out these injunctions because you know the critical period at which we are living, and that it is now high time, to rouse yourselves from sleep; for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first became believers. | This, knowing the time, that it is already time for you to awake out of sleep, for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed. |
Romans 13:12 | the night did advance, and the day came nigh; let us lay aside, therefore, the works of the darkness, and let us put on the armour of the light; | The night is far advanced, and day is about to dawn. We must therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness, and clothe ourselves with the armour of Light. | The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let's therefore throw off the works of darkness, and let's put on the armor of light. |
Romans 13:13 | as in day-time, let us walk becomingly; not in revellings and drunkennesses, not in chamberings and lasciviousnesses, not in strife and emulation; | Living as we do in broad daylight, let us conduct ourselves becomingly, not indulging in revelry and drunkenness, nor in lust and debauchery, nor in quarrelling and jealousy. | Let us walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy. |
Romans 13:14 | but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and for the flesh take no forethought for desires. | On the contrary, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for gratifying your earthly cravings. | But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts. |
