Exodus 17:1And all the company of the sons of Israel journey from the wilderness of Sin, on their journeyings, by the command of Jehovah, and encamp in Rephidim, and there is no water for the people to drink; All the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys, according to Yahweh's commandment, and encamped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink. And the children of Israel went on from the waste land of Sin, by stages as the Lord gave them orders, and put up their tents in Rephidim: and there was no drinking-water for the people.
Exodus 17:2and the people strive with Moses, and say, `Give us water, and we drink.` And Moses saith to them, `What? ye strive with me, what? ye try Jehovah?`Therefore the people quarreled with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Yahweh?"So the people were angry with Moses, and said, Give us water for drinking. And Moses said, Why are you angry with me? and why do you put God to the test?
Exodus 17:3and the people thirst there for water, and the people murmur against Moses, and say, `Why [is] this? thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to put us to death, also our sons and our cattle, with thirst.`The people were thirsty for water there; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?"And the people were in great need of water; and they made an outcry against Moses, and said, Why have you taken us out of Egypt to send death on us and our children and our cattle through need of water?
Exodus 17:4And Moses crieth to Jehovah, saying, `What do I to this people? yet a little, and they have stoned me.`Moses cried to Yahweh, saying, "What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me."And Moses, crying out to the Lord, said, What am I to do to this people? they are almost ready to put me to death by stoning.
Exodus 17:5And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Pass over before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel, and thy rod with which thou hast smitten the River take in thy hand, and thou hast gone:Yahweh said to Moses, "Walk on before the people, and take the elders of Israel with you, and take the rod in your hand with which you struck the Nile, and go.And the Lord said to Moses, Go on before the people, and take some of the chiefs of Israel with you, and take in your hand the rod which was stretched out over the Nile, and go.
Exodus 17:6Lo, I am standing before thee there on the rock in Horeb, and thou hast smitten on the rock, and waters have come out from it, and the people have drunk.` And Moses doth so before the eyes of the elders of Israel,Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.See, I will take my place before you on the rock in Horeb; and when you give the rock a blow, water will come out of it, and the people will have drink. And Moses did so before the eyes of the chiefs of Israel.
Exodus 17:7and he calleth the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the `strife` of the sons of Israel, and because of their `trying` Jehovah, saying, `Is Jehovah in our midst or not?`He called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because the children of Israel quarreled, and because they tested Yahweh, saying, "Is Yahweh among us, or not?"And he gave that place the name Massah and Meribah, because the children of Israel were angry, and because they put the Lord to the test, saying, Is the Lord with us or not?
Exodus 17:8And Amalek cometh, and fighteth with Israel in Rephidim,Then Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. Then Amalek came and made war on Israel in Rephidim.
Exodus 17:9and Moses saith unto Joshua, `Choose for us men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to-morrow I am standing on the top of the hill, and the rod of God in my hand.`Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God's rod in my hand. And Moses said to Joshua, Get together a band of men for us and go out, make war on Amalek: tomorrow I will take my place on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.
Exodus 17:10And Joshua doth as Moses hath said to him, to fight with Amalek, and Moses, Aaron, and Hur, have gone up [to] the top of the height; So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and went to war with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Exodus 17:11and it hath come to pass, when Moses lifteth up his hand, that Israel hath been mighty, and when he letteth his hands rest, that Amalek hath been mighty. It happened, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. Now while Moses' hand was lifted up, Israel was the stronger: but when he let his hand go down, Amalek became the stronger.
Exodus 17:12And the hands of Moses [are] heavy, and they take a stone, and set [it] under him, and he sitteth on it: and Aaron and Hur have taken hold on his hands, on this side one, and on that one, and his hands are stedfast till the going in of the sun;But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset. But Moses' hands became tired; so they put a stone under him and he took his seat on it, Aaron and Hur supporting his hands, one on one side and one on the other; so his hands were kept up without falling till the sun went down.
Exodus 17:13and Joshua weakeneth Amalek and his people by the mouth of the sword.Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. And Joshua overcame Amalek and his people with the sword.
Exodus 17:14And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Write this, a memorial in a Book, and set [it] in the ears of Joshua, that I do utterly wipe away the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens;`Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky."And the Lord said to Moses, Make a record of this in a book, so that it may be kept in memory, and say it again in the ears of Joshua: that all memory of Amalek is to be completely uprooted from the earth.
Exodus 17:15and Moses buildeth an altar, and calleth its name Jehovah-Nissi,Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Yahweh our BannerThen Moses put up an altar and gave it the name of Yahweh-nissi:
Exodus 17:16and saith, `Because a hand [is] on the throne of Jah, war [is] to Jehovah with Amalek from generation generation.`He said, "Yah has sworn: 'Yahweh will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.'"For he said, The Lord has taken his oath that there will be war with Amalek from generation to generation.
