Matthew 14:1At that time did Herod the tetrarch hear the fame of Jesus,At that time, Herod, the tetrarch, heard the report concerning Jesus,About that time Herod the Tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
Matthew 14:2and said to his servants, `This is John the Baptist, he did rise from the dead, and because of this the mighty energies are working in him.`and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him."and he said to his courtiers, "This is John the Baptist: he has come back to life and that is why these miraculous Powers are working in him."
Matthew 14:3For Herod having laid hold on John, did bind him, and did put him in prison, because of Herodias his brother Philip`s wife,For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.For Herod had arrested John, and had put him in chains, and imprisoned him, for the sake of Herodias his brother Philip's wife,
Matthew 14:4for John was saying to him, `It is not lawful to thee to have her,`For John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."because John had persistently said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
Matthew 14:5and, willing to kill him, he feared the multitude, because as a prophet they were holding him.When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.And he would have liked to put him to death, but was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a Prophet.
Matthew 14:6But the birthday of Herod being kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and did please Herod,But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before all the company, and so pleased Herod
Matthew 14:7whereupon with an oath he professed to give her whatever she might ask.Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.that with an oath he promised to give her whatever she asked.
Matthew 14:8And she having been instigated by her mother `Give me (says she) here upon a plate the head of John the Baptist;She, being put forward by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer."So she, instigated by her mother, said, "Give me here on a dish the head of John the Baptist."
Matthew 14:9and the king was grieved, but because of the oaths and of those reclining with him, he commanded [it] to be given;The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,The king was deeply vexed, yet because of his repeated oath and of the guests at his table he ordered it to be given her,
Matthew 14:10and having sent, he beheaded John in the prison,and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
Matthew 14:11and his head was brought upon a plate, and was given to the damsel, and she brought [it] nigh to her mother.His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother.The head was brought on a dish and given to the young girl, and she took it to her mother.
Matthew 14:12And his disciples having come, took up the body, and buried it, and having come, they told Jesus,His disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.Then John's disciples went and removed the body and buried it, and came and informed Jesus.
Matthew 14:13and Jesus having heard, withdrew thence in a boat to a desolate place by himself, and the multitudes having heard did follow him on land from the cities.Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a desert place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.Upon receiving these tidings, Jesus went away by boat to an uninhabited and secluded district; but the people heard of it and followed Him in crowds from the towns by land.
Matthew 14:14And Jesus having come forth, saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion upon them, and did heal their infirm;Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick.So Jesus went out and saw an immense multitude, and felt compassion for them, and cured those of them who were out of health.
Matthew 14:15and evening having come, his disciples came to him, saying, `The place is desolate, and the hour hath now past, let away the multitudes that, having gone to the villages, they may buy to themselves food.`When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, "The place is a desert, and the time is already past. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food."But when evening was come, the disciples came to Him and said, "This is an uninhabited place, and the best of the day is now gone; send the people away to go into the villages and buy something to eat."
Matthew 14:16And Jesus said to them, `They have no need to go away give ye them to eat.`But Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat.""They need not go away," replied Jesus; "you yourselves must give them something to eat."
Matthew 14:17And they say to him, `We have not here except five loaves, and two fishes.`They told him, "We only have here five loaves and two fish.""We have nothing here," they said, "but five loaves and a couple of fish."
Matthew 14:18And he said, `Bring ye them to me hither.`He said, "Bring them here to me.""Bring them here to me," He said,
Matthew 14:19And having commanded the multitudes to recline upon the grass, and having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he did bless, and having broken, he gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes,He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.and He told all the people to sit down on the grass. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and after looking up to heaven and blessing them, He broke up the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples distributed them to the people.
Matthew 14:20and they did all eat, and were filled, and they took up what was over of the broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full;They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.So all ate, and were fully satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they gathered up, filling twelve baskets.
Matthew 14:21and those eating were about five thousand men, apart from women and children.Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.Those who had eaten were about 5,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children.
Matthew 14:22And immediately Jesus constrained his disciples to go into the boat, and to go before him to the other side, till he might let away the multitudes;Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.Immediately afterwards He made the disciples go on board the boat and cross to the opposite shore, leaving Him to dismiss the people.
Matthew 14:23and having let away the multitudes, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray, and evening having come, he was there alone,After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.When He had done this, He climbed the hill to pray in solitude. Night came on, and he was there alone.
Matthew 14:24and the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.Meanwhile the boat was far out on the Lake, buffeted and tossed by the waves, the wind being adverse.
Matthew 14:25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went away to them, walking upon the sea,In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.But towards daybreak He went to them, walking over the waves.
Matthew 14:26and the disciples having seen him walking upon the sea, were troubled saying `It is an apparition,` and from the fear they cried out;When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out for fear.When the disciples saw Him walking on the waves, they were greatly alarmed. "It is a spirit," they exclaimed, and they cried out with terror.
Matthew 14:27and immediately Jesus spake to them, saying, `Be of good courage, I am [he], be not afraid.`But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! I AM! Don't be afraid."But instantly Jesus spoke to them, and said, "There is no danger; it is I; do not be afraid."
Matthew 14:28And Peter answering him said, `Sir, if it is thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters;`Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.""Master," answered Peter, "if it is you, bid me come to you upon the water."
Matthew 14:29and he said, `Come;` and having gone down from the boat, Peter walked upon the waters to come unto Jesus,He said, "Come!" Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus."Come," said Jesus. Then Peter climbed down from the boat and walked upon the water to go to Him.
Matthew 14:30but seeing the wind vehement, he was afraid, and having begun to sink, he cried out, saying, `Sir, save me.`But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"But when he felt the wind he grew frightened, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Master, save me."
Matthew 14:31And immediately Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, laid hold of him, and saith to him, `Little faith! for what didst thou waver?`Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"Instantly Jesus stretched out His hand and caught hold of him, saying to him, "O little faith, why did you doubt?"
Matthew 14:32and they having gone to the boat the wind lulled,When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.So they climbed into the boat, and the wind lulled;
Matthew 14:33and those in the boat having come, did bow to him, saying, `Truly God`s Son art thou.`Those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!"and the men on board fell down before him and said, "You are indeed God's Son."
Matthew 14:34And having passed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret,When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.When they had quite crossed over, they put ashore at Gennesaret;
Matthew 14:35and having recognized him, the men of that place sent forth to all that region round about, and they brought to him all who were ill,When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought to him all who were sick,and the men of the place, recognizing Him, sent word into all the country round. So they brought all the sick to Him,
Matthew 14:36and were calling on him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment, and as many as did touch were saved.and they begged him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.and they entreated Him that they might but touch the tassel of His outer garment; and all who did so were restored to perfect health.
